My BR800 works that way.
It can be used as a simple interface for recording or as a controller all thru USB.
It's limited in the number of faders of course so a BR 1600 or better would be just fine.

Is about how much you are willing to spend really?
Go for quality is what I would suggest or just forget it. It's always the cheapest alternative in the long run.
I would suggest that choose something that work with any platform. Here some less expensive and more expensive alternative that you can check out.
All work with Windows 7 x64 and SONAR X1 or X2.

Yes sure John but AVID Artist and SSL Nucleus are affordable. Still I think DAW controllers are overall overpriced.
Artist controller build quality should make it cost like $300-400 or something.
Cakewalk's V-700 STUDIO is also a good controller that you can take a look at.
That too is overpriced.
