  • Track layers - how do you dictate which clip/layer appears on top when collapsed?

it would make sense to me that the track layer on top would have seniority and be displayed on top of the others when track layers are closed, but this doesnt seem to be the case. I have a main clip that i want always displayed, but other takes seem to take preference and hide it underneath. Even selecting the clip to bring it to the front is only a temporary solution as when you click anywhere on its track, it gets pushed to the back again. what gives?

Track layers seems to be a work in progress from what I can see. There are definitely some issues that need to be ironed out by Cakewalk.

AFAICT you can't.

I'm sure they'll improve over time. IMHO they are already better than layers, I hope they continue to develop the lanes though. Greater resizing options would help to, as would quick grouping the take button.

The only way I have found around the problem is after you have all of your takes done is to hit the plus key under T1 and then select all of the clips in Take 1 and holding the shift key drag them to the new lane(using the Blend option).  Then you can take any of the take clips below and click on the upper bar and using the Shift key drag them into the T1 lane.  That clip then becomes the predominant one when you collapse the lane to track.   Some draw backs occur however if you click on a portion of an overlapped clip in track view that was below it then comes to the front instead of the T1.

Hopefully this will be addressed in future updates.

Another feature I would like to see is the midi take lanes behave as tracks in PRV so that you can hide the takes you don't want to edit over on the right hand side as you can do with tracks.

Perhaps this feature was added for backward compatibility :)  Seemingly random Z-order for clip/layer display, with no way to change them, has been a long-time irritation feature since layers were introduced at SONAR 4. If it's really a "work in progress", then somebody's slacking.

Bit of a tangent, but I'll tell you what I'd really like. It would be really cool if you could switch (on a per-track basis) between showing clips and showing a waveform preview, like you have for synth tracks and buses. So in the case of a collapsed track with lanes, you'd get a waveform of what the actual composite audio is.

Nice Idea John!

I could have sworn I saw active clip selection being displayed in the track (made of composite from the individual lanes) during the videos, but it doesn't seem to be that way...

for me, this was my biggest "problem" with layers and I was mistakenly believing it to be resolved... My only reason for good thoughts for lanes as I don't like them...

I'm sure if they add enuf changes I might change my mind, but right now I feel worse off than before as lanes display in extra real estate instead of within tracks (tho there's a halfway if you minimize the track while lanes are exposed)...

The biggest issues for me with layers have not been addressed with lanes... those being the above topic as well as the re-arrange option in layers... I find more problems/issues with lanes now than I did with layers before... None have been addressed (yet?)... Hopefully the next fix will address some of these issues...

The new realm of monitor screens addresses track length for the extra real estate, but screen height has not been approved and items such as the current lanes implementation are not helping that matter...

Here's hoping for some fixes! ;-)
