Sample drive and Laptop

Bought a pretty good laptop. i7 3rd Gen, 7200rpm HD, Nvidea 630 2gb, etc, etc. Would a USB 3.0 external HD do for a sample drive.
I really don't ned to record on the laptop but I would like to use the softsynths and mix

Absolutely - plenty fast enough - as long as what you are transferring is within the max bandwidth of USB 3.0 - which is something like 10 times fast than USB 2.0 - I believe it is about 600 MB/sec, but of course actual speeds will vary.
