I downloaded the DSF Strings thta came with X2 and can't install them.

It seems odd thta after I "extract all" from the .zip folder, and then try to run the Digital_Sound_Factory_Symphonic_Strings_HD file that results, it asks to have all its content extracted.

It acts like it's extracting and then when it shows 5 seconds to go, it just stays there forever.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you running windoze 7? if so right click on the exe and run as administrator, follow the install pop ups.

There is another thread about this same problem. Someone suggested you need to turn off your anti-virus program. I just waited a while. Out of curiousity, I opened the stand alone Dim Pro, opened the program browser, hit F5, and they showed up on the library list.

OK. I'm running it as administrator, though it shows no Progress box, so I have no idea what it's doing. all virus stuff is off.

Even with all the virus stuff off, running in admin mode did nothing but spin its wheels for 20 minutes before I pulled the plug. Has anyone installed the symphonic strings successfully?

Yes (on Windows 7 x64), and I don't remember doing anything special.  I do recall it took quite a long time though.

Silicon: Glad to hear you were successful. In what directory did the strings install? Do you think you just double-clicked on a .exe file and they installed?

Do you happen to recall if you had to extract files more than once?

I upgraded about 2 weeks after X2 became available. There was not much talk about the strings install problem. I downloaded the string expansion. I did not know to turn off my anti-virus so it was on. I simply clicked the installer and let it run. I,too, had the hangup where it just sat there for a long time on 99%. Just out of curiousity, I stopped the installer. I then went to the stand alone version of Dim Pro. Opened it, clicked on the the browser, pressed F5 to re-scan the browser, and there they were. They showed up on my folder list. I immediately started going thru the patches and they all loaded and played with no problems. That's all I did. I have been very lucky all along with every version and every install so far! The only real head scratcher I had so far with any Cake product has been the Rapture installation in X2 if you already have Dim Pro 1.5. That one was crazy. I figured it out on my own, with help from some kind people on this forum, before Cake made the installer available to owners. That and the expansion pack installation for Rapture as well are really tough.

I tried the "patch" thing but it told me it couldn't find the right version of DP in the folder I specified (where DP is installed).

So just for kicks, I tried installing the strings again, and Lo, they installed.

Far as I can tell, I did nothing different from the several other times.

I tried them out a bit and they are indeed there.

That said, my initial impression, from listening to 4 or 5 patches is less than overwhelming. they're BIG, for sure, but there seemed to be some level inconsistencies and some reverb--probably natural--that I would prefer not be there.

But, what the heck.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions, they at least gave me something to do while the software decided to let me install it.
