Is there a trick to get the midi timing much tighter ? I find it not so good ATM. Which buffer do I  need 2 tweak here?
 
I use 128 samples on my MOTU
 
 

128 should be good, try hitting the PDC button to bypass Plugin Delay Compensation, or FX button to bypass effects. Sounds like plugin compensation interfering.

Are we talking about audio latency here or midi timing?

I haven't seen an adjustment for midi.

I do have an older interface that works with cubase that uses buffering to more accurately deliver midi out of all the ports when they are supposed to be. Must not be that much of an issue because that stopped making them.

Sonar has soOOoo many settings ,,,I wish truly there was a book just for the settings ! hahaha
 
Sure the Pro way , I understand ,,,,,,maybe its some midi buffer ? Or a setting which can improve it ? My DPC is soOO low 70-90 microsecs.
 
my PC is very good....even without SSD
 
so maybe its now default tweaked for medium PC´s ?

Hi Hero,

You need to be a lot more specific when you talk about MIDI timing.
Are you talking about MIDI "jitter" upon playback?
Are you saying that X2 doesn't record the MIDI data precisely?
Are you talking about timing issues with virtual instruments or with hardware instruments connected via a MIDI interface?

Depending on your scenario, you may find that a different MIDI interface provides tighter timing.

Lots of variables when you talk about MIDI timing...

For me, bypassing all the EFX bins makes a big differance. Also if there is a lot of soft synths I sometimes have to mute a few while recording a new MIDI track. I don't sweat the last few Miliseconds as they disapear when you quantize. MIDI has ALWAYS had latency.

There really isn't any parameter in SONAR that affects MIDI timing accuracy per se. Is the issue with the relative timing of notes played back by a single synth, or the sync between different MIDI instruments and/or audio tracks?

If possible, I suggest you try recording some simultaneous audio and MIDI from a keyboard synth (or by micing performance noise from a drum/keyboard controller), and compare the MIDI recording and playback sync with the audio against the timeline to get a handle on what "not so tight" is in ticks/milliseconds, and whether it's a consistent offset, or random variability. The former has the potential to be corrected by configuration changes. The latter would more likely be due to an underlying O/S or interface hardware/driver issue.

The key to fixing stuff like this is determining exactly what the nature and degree of error is, and where it originates. There are so many ways for audio and MIDI to get out of sync, you have to very precisely describe the symptoms to get good help.

The only way I was ever able to hear midi timing problems was by sending out a whole lot of tracks or really complex percussion things.

It was always associated with midi hardware.

Never seen any DAW adjustment available.

Audio latency is usually experienced with midi tracks because VST synths do have latency or can stress your computer.

For reference on swamptooth's posting of the screenshot showing the path to the "Prepare Using" buffer setting, having this setting too low (500ms is the preferred starting point, though some versions default to 250 which can be problematic on some systems) usually manifests as MIDI "dropouts" - some notes not being played at all while others play as expected. I can;t recall a case where changing this setting addressed a timing problem.
