I love this band, even if every song kinda sounds the same...

I'm sure this would be more interesting if only I spoke Japanese...

Thanks for the introduction! The Japanese history and folklore gives a fantastic set of visual and musical spices to implement into western styles.

Somewhat tangential, but this documentary shows the universality of progressive rock, in this case in the Philippines. It's a very musical place where you can hear all genres, from classic American folk music to smooth jazz. The film's mostly in Tagalog (or more accurately "Taglish"), but you don't need to be fluent in that language to get the message or enjoy the music.

This is Fuseboxx, one of the more successful Filipino prog bands. "Successful" is a relative term, though. They're subsisting mostly on low-paying bar gigs around Manila. (Like anywhere in the world, a musician is someone who loads $5000 worth of gear into a $500 car to go to a $50 gig.)

On yet another tangent, check out the documentary "Heavy Metal in Baghdad". Satanic imagery is old hat in the metal world, but in the Middle East they don't find it the least bit amusing. Imagine having your gear destroyed by a rocket grenade. Like one of the guys says "look around...we are living in a heavy metal world".

Miguel has gone over to Reaper, but still stops by now and again for the sparkling conversation.

...

This is one of the things I have the hardest time with ... and it goes back to the 1970's ... the "progressive" scene was not limited to one place, and it was in a lot of European countries, and by 1980, with the stuff doing well in Japan, it got easily taken in many other places, around the area and in SE Asia.

The list is not huge, but by the time we add it all up, it gets big quickly.

There was a film from Cuba, in the Intl Film Festival here in Portland a few years back, and one of the great things in the film? Progressive MASSIVELY GOOD rock in the background, and I even noted it in the review, the only person to do so. Brazil has a massive scene, and it's been there for at least 40 years, Argentina, Chile, Mexico ... they all have bands that have been at it quite sometime. And the kids ... are doing even better stuff! And we haven't even discussed the jazz area that has also been progressive with the likes of Gismonti, Vasconcellos and many others.

If you ever want to check out an amazing blog, in the ProgArchives, there is a krautrock (hate that term!) thread that is about 40 plus pages, and it is kept by a guy from Japan, and his knowledge of progressive, jazz and experimental stuff ... is down right insane.

Just in case you ever want to check some different stuff ... there are some far out things out there.
