Why not just fade the audio track/bus that is driven by the MIDI?

Simple.

Do you really want a Midi fade or are you wanting to fade your audio?

There are some differences between the two which can result in a difference in what you hear, depending on what you end up doing.

Midi can be faded in a variety of ways, you could use the midi fader or insert a series of CC11 controllers, I'm sure there's other ways

Audio is usually faded via an automation envelope working on the track fader.

Is there just one track to be faded or several?

If it's a lot of tracks you might be better off with buss envelopes rather than track envelopes.

Yep, use a volume envelope on the synth track or the bus it's being routed to. Then add a node near the end of the envelope at the point where you want the fade to begin. Adjust the node and the end of track node.

i'm probably not explaining myself well (as usual) i have all my drum tracks routed to a bus which shows no data at all however the controls work fine. i can hit "write" then manually lower the slider but i want to do is fade all the tracks at the same time which i've done in the audio tracks. when i hilight the part of the drum track which does have data written in it then open the effects tab everything is greyed out. i'm wondering if i need to convert the drum track to something? i'm very confused. thank you all for your help

Perhaps he has just discovered that you can put a volume envelope in the Bus track, No?

Another way to fade MIDI is to draw volume controllers in the PRV lower pane. That would be the #7 controller.
