Just out of curiosity are those IDE or SCSI drives? If SCSI did you ever consider a RAID?

I have one of those. Promise... Right? If it's SATA2 it's hotswappable. All SATA stuff is hot swappable. Offcourse not when it runs the OS. But for swapping out a disk with projects it is a great solution...
And because the tray is aluminium it cools too.

I now have disconnected the little fan. As it started rattling..

At the moment I'd say use two or three internall disks (if can be one should be a SSD) and add a USB3 card (or maybe it's present on the mobo). And use two or four USB3 2 or 3 TB externall disks. That way backup is fast and easy. And with two and four units you can have a backup of your data. I have two usb3 harddisks myself.. (well one is USB2 but I'll change that soon)..
