I just recently started dabbling with the arppegiator in Sonar X1 Essential.   Searching Youtube for tips & tricks on this subject I stumbles upon this video.

In short the trick converts the audio from the arppegiator to midi.
The Tip/Trick is for Abelton but I was wondering if and how this is accomplished in Sonar X1..  

I am running Sonar Essentials.

In Sonar X2 there is no need to extract MIDI from the arpeggiator. It uses MIDI as well as effect MIDI on a MIDI track. The MIDI it uses is in the form  of ptn files.

The arpeggiator lets you play intricate patterns of notes that would otherwise be extremely difficult or
impossible to play manually and at speeds and octave ranges that exist beyond the physical
limitations of the player or keyboard range.
Arpeggiated events are new events that are based on notes that you play on your controller
keyboard. The new events are rhythmically and harmonically specified by the arpeggiator’s preset,
allowing you to “play” an endless variety sophisticated musical passages with simple key pressing.
The most significant capability of the arpeggiator is its ability to apply algorithmic variations on your
input as well as MIDI-based patterns.
In addition to note events, the arpeggiator can send parameter automation such as pan, volume,
and even effects automation for the current track.
Each MIDI and instrument track has its own integrated arpeggiator, visually located in the Track
view. Running multiple arpeggiators across tracks can help realize exciting melodic and rhythmic
textures.
The arpeggiator controls are accessed in the Track Inspector.

Yeah I've got the idea of what an arpeggiator does. 

I downloaded a couple of VST arpeggiator's and I was able to record those generated notes into a  separate midi track  For some reason I can't get other VST's to do the same thing.  When I create the track I'm using the MIDI out option, but when I record nothing is going into the new midi track.

 What I'm trying to do is get Sonar X! to record those generated notes into a separate Midi file (so they can be edited).

Once you have recorded your arp input ..whether it be chords or single notes, simply select the clip, right click and "bounce to clips".. the chords or note inputs will be converted to the arpeggiated output clip.
 
edit: suggest you change title of thread to "recording midi from Arpeggiator".. midi from audio is a different kettle of worms!.

The reply was talking about the built in arpeggiator that's on every midi track, bounce it to write the arp midi to the clip.

Lots of vst synths have motion or movement and arp functions but don't export any of their midi. That you would have to convert it from audio to midi to get any midi out of it.

Melodyne Editor can create MIDI from audio. It's not perfect but at times it can be pretty good. 

I do not know if Melodyne Essentials has this feature but if it does, it's typically a $49 (on sale) solution.

the original question was referencing the built in arpeggiator in ableton and how could the same be done in sonar.. that has been answered...bounce to clips.

any vst arpeggiator questions need the name of the vst.. as personally any vst arpeggiator that doesnt produce midi out is a total waste of money..even if its free..lol

This has already been answered.. There is no issue in "getting sonar to take the notes generated from the arpeggiator and record them as midi".. see post #4. The confusion of some forum members who were trying to help you was that your thread title is midi from audio and that is not what you want.
 
Simply record your arpeggiated midi track, click on the clip, right click and "bounce to clips" .. the midi notes/chord forms will disappear and be replaced by the midi arpeggiated pattern.
