In several other sequencers, just dragging a VSTi from the browser onto a MIDI track converts it to an Instrument track, ready to load the patch.

Is there some similar way to do this in X2, other then the multi step process of inserting VSTi audio track, assigning the MIDI to that VSTi, selecting the two, and converting to Instrument track?

I assume X2 has Insert Soft Synth-function like all of its predecessors, big and small??? But I may be wrong as I don't have X2.....

I don't know anything about drag and drop for this, but if you insert a soft synth into the synth rack, when the Insert Soft Synth Options dialog box opens up, just check the box for creating a  'Simple Instrument Track' and perhaps the Synth Property Page box as well, and just pick your patch from the Synth's property page and you are done.

It takes like 5 seconds - really just however long it takes to select the preset in the synth.

Would that give you what you are looking for?

Here are a couple of links on drag and drop of synths - maybe these are what you are trying to find:

Sorry - that second link was to a script to watch a video.

Here is the link to the page that had both links on it.  Just scroll down the page a bit until you see a section called: Using Soft Synths for Studio Composition, and you will see the other link I posted as well as a link to watch a video on dragging and dropping.

for a simple drag-and-drop-from-the-browser-solution, you can always create a track template.

just set up the software instrument exactly like you want it, then select the tracks you want included, right-click and select "save as track template"

this is a very powerful feature and it's not just limited to create a simple drag and drops for your software-instruments.. you can also load an instrument into the software instrument (maybe a bass, that you like and use alot) and save this (with all routings and effects included) as a track template..

check the manual for more details about it.. it's an awesome feature :)

Thanks, Loptec - I never used them, but it sounds like they are quite useful.

I just dragged Pentagon 1 into the FX bin of an audio track from the Browser I then loaded a MIDI clip into a MIDI track and had its output go to the input of the Pentagon 1. It works just fine. Now if you want Sonar to create a Simple  Instrument track every time a dragged synth is placed into an FX bin that would cause some issues for me.

I avoid Simple Instruments tracks so I wont try to use that.  Normally I use the synth rack.
