  • Automation lanes.... no multi-channel support?

So, i like the new Automation lanes.... however... I still get the feeling that automation in general is still limited, for example...

I do not understand why automation is limited to one track on a VST.... or am i missing something?..

An Access Virus has sixteen parts, plus three stereo outputs... If I pick the midi source as the origin for the automation in the synth property page, then i can separately put the audio automation on the three audio tracks, however all automation for the 16 channels (16 source midi tracks in the folder) associated with that VST must be on one track...

Is there anyway that I can actually see the automation of a midi track along with the track itself?..

thx

Not sure I'm fully understanding but isn't that the point of the lanes? You put the automation on one track and then break it out to the lanes. That way you have the track data in the track and the lanes have the automation.

The Virus has 16 parts, but clearly can only have one instance of the VST (as there is only one synth) and, afaik you can only have the automation on a single midi track to a VST, while the data itself may be on up to 16 tracks (one track per part).

So with this restriction i have no visibility to any given individual track/part's data and its associated automation...

Ah, I see, I didn't fully understand what you meant.

While it may not be ideal, a workround could be to move the automation around as required. It is possible to change the automation display track after the event, not sure if that'll help at all or not.

hmm, hate to ask but how would i do that?.. i dont find the help/reference guide much use on automation...

guess i am looking to solve two critical issues...

a) viewing a track and its associated automation along with it, and
b) the ability to group/ copy the clip..ie the data and its automation, from track to track within a track folder for a vst

thx

Open the browser in the multidock or floating (Very important - docked won't work) and then open the synth rack.

Click on the synth and you'll then see toward the bottom right of the synth the  "Automation" selector. From there you can re-assign the automation to your chosen track.

Effectively you can move it to the MIDI data track of your choice, not ideal but workable perhaps.

hey thanks Karl, at least i discovered something.. (didnt know about the real time reassigning)..but that just shifts all the automation onto another track.... so still not able to view or link a given midi track with a given set of automation data....

You should be able to move the automation to a MIDI track of your choice. Therefore you can move it to any one of the Virus midi tracks with data on and then either view and edit the automation "in track" or break the automation out into lanes.

I see that the automation can be moved to be viewed on any of my input tracks, so it helps a little bit, as i can screen the data (laborius but possible) for that specific track.. and so it will aid sound sculpting but I cannot however, link or copy a part and its associated automation data... any clip is associated with all the automation data from all input tracks

I have put in a feature request as this limitation is not in some other DAW

Again it's a work round rather than a solution but you can either use "in track" envelope editing so seeing only the one envelope at a time or use the lanes to hide envelopes you don't want to see for multiple envelope editing.

I agree it'd be easier with more control over the envelopes and where they are displayed though, even it were on a per channel basis.
