Hello,
I am having a problem getting SONAR X1 to work.
1.       I installed the Sonar software on my Windows XP desktop computer. Install went smoothly.
2.       I have a Yamaha P95 keyboard that I plugged into my USB port using the UM-ONE cable and software.  There are three red lights labeled IN, OUT and USB on the cable. The USB light is on and the others are off.
3.       I started up the SONAR software and tried the demo and it works.
4.       I clicked on new project, then  INSERT Audio track.
5.       Then I had someone play the keyboard and pressed the various record buttons on the SONAR screen.  Nothing happens except for the vertical scan line which moves from left to right. But there are no other signs of activity. Nothing is recorded.
6.       I have no idea where to turn next. I just want to play a few notes and record that so that I can play it back, look at the notes and do all the cool stuff that SONAR is supposed to do. However I am stuck at step 1 to get anything to record. The Windows XP system did recognize that I plugged the UM-ONE cable into the computer.
Any ideas for how I can proceed?  Thanks very much for any help.
Sincerely,
Ray

Welcome, Ray.
Which version of X1 do you have (LE, Essentials, Studio,Producer)?
The MIDI I/O lights will normally be off, but should flash when you hit or release a key.
That's the first link in the chain.
If the MIDI In light does not flash, verify that the MIDI Out of the Yamaha is connected to the MIDI In of the UM-1.
Also verify that the Yamaha is actually transmitting. You may need to turn local off. I'm not familiar with this keyboard, so check your manual.
In X1 Preferences>MIDI Devices, make sure the UM-1 I/O ports are selected. If not, Sonar will know they are there, but will not communicate with them. If Sonar is receiving data from the UM-1, the MIDI icon in your task bar will flash.
This is the second link.
If you do not see this, you cannot record the MIDI output from the Yamaha.
If you do, we can move on to the next step.
Have you inserted a MIDI track? If so, the Input should be set to the UM-1(or Omni, but this doesn't always work).
Arm the MIDI track by clicking the record button in the track, then click record in the transport.
If that doesn't work, let us know where you are experiencing a disconnect.

Welcome to the forum.
How old is the Yamaha? In the past, Yamaha keyboards wouldn't work with anything other than a Yamaha MIDI-to-USB converter.
Did you install any necessary drivers for the UM-One?
If Windows isn't seeing it, it certainly won't work.
MIDI will not be recorded in an audio track. Make sure you record MIDI in a MIDI track and set the input to the USB device (once it's 'seen' by Windows), set your input channel to MIDI Omni or whatever channel the keyboard transmits on, set your bank and patch, if available and desired.
Set your output to the keyboard if you want to use the keyboard's sounds, or a software synthesizer if you want to use one of those.

Step 4 may be the problem.  Are you trying to record the sound from the keyboard or the keystrokes?  Recording the playing (instead of the sound) is done with MIDI and you need to insert a MIDI track.  After doing this you will want to route the output of the MIDI track to a soft-synth.

Can you see your Yamaha as an input device in preferences (as either MIDI or as audoi?

Thank you everyone, I will try the various suggestions this weekend. A lot of this is new to me but I am excited to get going. I am not a music or computer newbie but a Sonar newbie.

I got some help too from the Sonar staff Jon, and he suggested that I may have my cables to the keyboard reversed. So tried reversing them and right away there was some activity when the keyboard was played.  Now I just have to read the rest of the manual to learn the various features and to see how to do the playback.
