  • Question on File / Folder organization

Hey gang

I have a question about how Sonar handles my file folders.

Background: i have been using Sonar for a number of years, and am currently running X1 producer. Over the years, i have created a folder tree where all of my projcects have been saved. i have a folder for each year since 2004, as well as several other folders for various groups of things.

i would like to create some new folders that would be named after the "album" that a song ended up on (i have 'produced' five albums over the years). i.e. i would like to create a new folder for each of the albums recorded, and then move the tracks from the 'year' folder into the 'album name' folder.

fyi - all of the audio files live in a central folder called 'audio data', and i do not intend to move any of them.

question: do i need to be careful about moving the project files? can i just drag and drop the cwp files from one folder to another, and not 'break' anything.

given the number of years that i have stuck to my folder naming convention, i'm a bit nervous about making changes.

thanks in advance for any help.

cheers

I move and rename CWP files all the time, such as for trying something out on a project, without wanting to do something bad to the original project I may create a new project folder manually, then copy/past an existing project's CWP file and Audio folder into the new manually-created project folder.  I then would normally rename the CWP file to match the name of the new project folder it now lives in, but that isn't required by Sonar - although not doing that becomes a nightmare for keeping track of where things are coming from - having more than one CWP file with the same name is not something I would ever recommend.

I also had a separate folder set up for X2 projects, and now that I have completetly switch over to using X2 I moved all of the projects from that folder back into the standard Cakewalk Projects folder that had been set up from X1 and prior.  (Don't forget to update the Edit>Preferences>Folder Locations> Cakewalk Projects target folder location, if you do something like what I did.

I hope that helps you

Here's your problem

You might find that if you move the cwp without the audio files then Sonar will lose track of what is supposed to be in the project.

Are you saying you're not using "Per Project Files"?

If I were you, I'd tread VERY carefully if you don't intend to move your audio files - you could lose years of work.

If it was me, I'd create your new folder structure  ENABLE PER PROJECT FILES, Open up each project in turn, and do a "save as" pointing to the new folder, and make sure that "Copy audio With Project" is selected.

This is also a very good way to clean up your audio folders as anything not actually referenced by the project will be copied.

You can delete the original Audio folder when you've done.

Seriously, why anyone would choose NOT to use Per Project Folders is baffling.
