I know the STAFF view is a bone of contention

Could some of you please try the following and let me know your results.

Select a few notes in staff view

Right click, in the staff view, to bring up the context menu.

What happens next????????

More info. is needed here.

<humor>
1] Is it a contiguous selection of notes or non-contiguous?
2] Are any dotted notes part of that selection?
3] When right-clicking, are you positioning the mouse pointer on a selected note?
4] Is that selected note dotted?
5] Have you changed the color of that selected dotted note?
6] If you haven't changed the color of that selected dotted note, is it blue?
7] If not, what color is it now?
8] Have you tried selecting other non-dotted, non-colored notes?
9] Are you still in Staff view wondering what happens when right clicking on a group of notes?

YES
2] Are any dotted notes part of that selection?
For the sake of this exercise NO, but it would not matter.

NO
4] Is that selected note dotted?
For the sake of this exercise NO, but it would not matter.
5] Have you changed the colour of that selected dotted note?
For the sake of this exercise NO, but it would not matter.
6] If you haven't changed the colour of that selected dotted note, is it blue?
Note is un-dotted.
7] If not, what colour is it now?
Bright purple with green hairy spots
8] Have you tried selecting other non-dotted, non-coloured notes?
NO
9] Are you still in Staff view wondering what happens when right clicking on a group of notes?
NO
Yes I have corrected the spelling of COLOUR and HUMOUR.

Humour aside it was/is a serious question, for me all notes become un-selected and 98% of the context menu is grey or unusable.

Whilst I appreciate that the Staff view is not much use for producing scores, I find it useful for composition.

Consequently I would like to ask.

"Could we extra pretty please with exceptionable large and shiny spherical objects attached please have all the STAFF view editing functionality we had prior SONAR X1"

Thank you

When i do what you asked i get the "note properties" window.  I was curious as to which note the window was in reference, 'cause i had a many notes selected.  I changed the pitch and it was the last note selected on the far right.

Hey Wookie,
I also frequently use staff view (for me it's a traditional, comfortable music writing/editing format).
Following your stated procedure, I get the same context menu result when having the smart tool selected, BUT when I middle click & select the edit tool, everything in the context menu opens up & the selected notes remain selected for editing.  Does this help?
Best,
HeyDan

Will try this tomorrow now, thanks, just as a matter of interest which of the five gadgets do you mean by the edit tool?  Cheers.

I did what you asked and I got the same results you did: "for me all notes become un-selected and 98% of the context menu is grey or unusable." My avatar may give you a hint as to what I think needs attention. And this post, with each sentence in a separate paragraph, will now run gloriously together, thanks to how the forum software handles Firefox.

Yep, Wookie - I got really frustrated with this until I figured out I had to click the Edit tool as Heydan mentioned. I do almost all my programming in staff view, and it looks like I share your and few other's pain with the neglected staff view.

While we're on the subject, have any of you seen this behavior yet? http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2678597

And before anyone says "go buy a notation program," let me state for the record that any griping from me about the staff view has NOTHING to do with making print-ready scores or lead sheets. It's about programming, and being able to view parts in a musical way as opposed to numbers on a grid.

With the assistance of Hayden I now have a sort of resolution to the issue.

However it would appear that the SMART tool is actually not so smart.

It is also apparent that yet again staff view editing functionality has been down graded again.

This is because it now requires multiple clicks do to do something that in 8.5 and previously required a simple click to select and then a right click to select slide.

To do the same action now you need to

1. Click centre or wheel to open tool menu (Yes I know the T opens the tool menu)

2. Click to select the select tool

3. Click to lasso the notes required

4. Click centre or wheel to open tool menu (Yes I know the T opens the tool menu)

5. Click to select the edit tool.

6. Click to select EDIT

7. Continue as in previous version of SONAR and Pro Audio x.x

Sorry Bakers but this is not progress it is retrograde in direction and exceptionally frustrating.

All I want is to be able to use the staff view as a means to edit my midi note information with the same tools as available in the PRV.

Please Please Please.  I do not need to produce scores, I have lived with the limitations of this aspect of the Cakewalk staff view since 1994.  If I did I would go and purchase the most appropriate software to do the job.

The staff view editing was one of the features of Pro Audio and SONAR that has kept me coming back at each upgrade cycle sine 1994.

Rant suspended.

Not that I've actually tried, but, does right-click lasso select work in the SV?   If so, that would eliminate at least one click/tool change.
