Lost a partition on a drive that had Sonar projects. Also am installing a new DAW with S8.5P. I have some old discs with BUN files. S8.5P barfs reading them (why, Calkewalk?) so I dug out the old PA9 CD and reg card, install it on an XP VM, loaded up the BUN, saveed it to a WRK, and copied over the wrk & WAV file to the 8.5 DAW. It barfs again. It starts to load then says "converting old format", gets to 40% and never completes. This is a small WAV file too. What kind of hoops do I need to jump through to restore this project?

I find the lack of backward support really insulting to those of us who have stuck with this company for so many years (since 4.0 for DOS for me but I think I'm done).  At least provide some off-line util to make this task easier (or even possible!).

Pardon my tone but I'm pissed off tonight. What should have been a 5 minute task has wasted a couple of hours and I still haven't restored the project.

Define,

some old discs

I think therein lies your problem if talking about CDs or DVDs.

And, Bun files have been known to cause problems.

You're missing the point entirely. There's nothing wrong with the disc or BUN file. It restored to the PA9 instance just fine (yes, it plays in PA9). Now I have a PA9 WRK file and WAV file that S8.5P will not load.

When you opened the BUN, why didn't you save it to a CWP file instead of a WRK. Sonar no longer uses the old WRK format. However, I've found that most WRKs will open in Sonar. Try saving the project to a CWP and see what happens.

You may find something in here http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=2675846 that might help.

Didn't think PA9 had that option but thanks for the suggestion, I'll look. If not, I guess I'll have to install an old version of Sonar. What a PITA....

Saw that but I'm passed the point of dealing with the BUN file. Also, the rename trick didn't work in 8.5.

Actually I was thinking of having CW tech support convert it into a usable format. They routinely offer to do it.

So I just remembered an old system that still has my Delta 1010 in it also still has Sonar 6 installed. It loaded the bun with no problems and converted it in a heartbeat. Why the heck would Cakewalk break that capability?

Have you tried opening those files in the Safe Mode?(holding the shift key down while you open them prior to opening Sonar,i.e. double clicking them in windows explorer). could be a plugin causing the problem.

yup... opens an empty project, same plugs are on the S6 system.

BTW, I went back to PA9 to check and it had no option to save as CWP. I'm sure some "historian" here can comment on what version first used that format but I'm guessing it was Sonar 1.

So it's clear that the ability to load old the BUN and WRK formats existed in Sonar as recent as 6 but is broken in 8.53. I wonder if it's "fixed" in Xn.....
