Windows 8 is supposed to sell for something like $40, I think, if you upgrade from XP, Vista, etc.

....... while Win 7 Home only 16 GB......

Steve
I was under the impression that Win 7 Home only supported 8 GB... which is why I have only 8 on the system I just bought. Would love to be able to upgrade to 16 GB if possible. Can anybody confirm that Win 7 Home (Premium) supports 16 GB.

I'll do a search and see if I can't answer my own question.

EDIT: OK, I searched and found the Win 7 64bit Home Premium limit is 16 GB... now I need to figure out why Dell told me 8 was the limit....?

Thanks!

Rob

Some further tips... If you aren't going to make the jump and improve your processor and motherboard then be sure to do the following and you should get a huge improvement in performance: ******************************************************************************* Wait and upgrade to Windows 8 and be sure to get 64 bit. The 32 bit version of windows is limited to 4 gigs so it's pretty pointless (I have a monster of a system, but never made the 64 bit jump at it is by far my limiting factor, even though I have 16gb installed, windows shows only 3.64 usable). ******************************************************************************* Definitely jump up to an HD radeon video card, but you will need to make sure your power supply will support the connectors and wattage as well as your case having enough room for a large card. Saphire is probably your most reliable bet for video card manufacturer. ******************************************************************************* Going SSD for your OS drive is the way to go. Intel makes some of the more reliable and fastest. Only put Windows, Sonar, and VST's on the SSD and install all samples and audio folders to the secondard drives.

Yes, to access more than 4 GB you must be using the 64 bit Windows 7.  After searching around I found that I can, indeed, use up to 16 GB with my system.

Thanks for additional comments, Guys.

Best,
Rob

Take a look at this forum thread from the Computer section and the comments of DAW PC builders, before you jump into Win 8.
