I am a gear addict and would spend my “milk and bread” money on new electronics, especially computers. I also know that I have to wait for Windows 8 to get stable and new hardware to become available. I do not see XP as legacy system. Next time, I will just not invest 4k in to computer. But then again- I wanted 15,000 rpm drives, and back then they cost $900 each, I had 3. It cost me $400 each to replace each of them, plus motherboard and 3 Gb of memory- if you wondering- I had electrical distribution problem on motherboard which was sending wrong voltage to all parts, which burned fans, which burned drives and memory. With all new parts, it is almost new computer. I may even get wild and try to install Win 8 on it. That would be funny, if it works. But- no, it won’t. Only 3 Gb of memory and single processor… also the other drivers for drives and videocard will not be supported… I am just going to install SP X2 and see what happens.

Bvideo, thank you for the idea, I will look in to it. You are the one of few that posted something useful. I have to stay with this system for a while, and I hope it going to make this last reconfiguration. This system is a survivor and real worrier. Yes, I can buy $800 system, but then the drivers won’t work for sound card… I need at least 24 channels, so I am looking at StudioLive, which is about 3.5 K now days… It would be great if Sonar just installs. I promise not to update it any more. Just this version. Lol.

My XP on a q6600 has been rock solid for YEARS as its literally never been on the internet.  Its as fast today as the day I installed it.

My is connected to the Internet, and has Norton 360 latest. I do not go on internet with it but it connected and downloads all upgrades for Windows. By the way- Microsoft still supports XP- all upgdates they release so far are for XP, Vista and W7.

IMO, just get your current system working as it was with the software you have that you know works good on it, designed for it. And be happy until you can get a new machine.

A good working old system is much better then trying to keep updating an old system. I've tried it and the gain is not worth the battle.

My XP has been unbelievably stable for years as its NEVER been on the internet.  Literally never.  It is foolproof and as fast today as it was the day I installed it.  The only software that it has installed all relate to musical creation and production.

That probably means you should stay with the DAW version you are presently running until you are ready to upgrade your OS also. I don't think it necessarily follows that because your system is stable, Cake should support XP. I just upgraded to Win 7 myself a few weeks ago - lots of software (NI as an example) no longer supporting XP or Vista.

They created the software, so of course they'll support it longer than companies who write programs. Windows XP is great for surfing the web and simple apps, or using as a simple storage server, but it lacks the power in both design and hardware specs for a high-end DAW in 2012.

Give up the fight man. You won't win!

TIME MARCHES ON!

Btw, you spent $99 on a program, yet you can get a pretty machine decent enough for X2 for $400. Bad money management!

This shouldn't come as a big surprise. We stated on all our system requirements that SONAR X2 will only support Win 7 and Win 8. We are no longer supporting XP or Vista.
