As a dev of sorts I can say that I support Cake's plan to not support xp or vista. As it sucks resources from a dying (no matter how much we may love it) platform in XP, and well vista should be taken out back and shot. It's ok if we all pretend Vista never happened.

On more than one occasion during development of the (late I know) BCR200 multi Unit Plugin for Sonar I have run working and stable code in xp that did weird things in 7. If I wasn't such a nice guy and not so determined to have this thing work on Sonar 4 all the way though to X2 (and it does btw) I would abandon 32 bit altogether to focus energy there but I have friend who is running Sonar 4 - I kid you not and he is happy.

Go Cake Go!

I'm hoping that Cake release the 1st patch for X2 before the Win8 update to Sonar, so that that update is available to XP/Vista users who upgraded to X2 before it was clarified that Win8 support precludes updates for XP/Vista.

Yes, I would like to see at least one patch to X2 before they integrate the code base for Win8. Any change in a code base that is massive enough to preclude two operating systems from functioning is bound to have other issues. X2 has been fairly stable for me. I would really hate to see the changes for Win8 create a bunch of new problems.

From what Noel has said the X2 Win8 codebase will only cause one problem for XP/Vista users - they won't be able to update Sonar. It's some sort of MSoft rule/requirement for Win8.

Brandon isn't a developer :) Seriously that was posted in August and before we started work on the Win8 specific stuff.
When we say its not officially supported it means that any limitations that may exist may not even be discovered since we aren't testing that OS anymore.
In this case Brandon simply wasn't aware of the limitations of XP as it related to future development. He wasn't trying to intentionally mislead anyone. Anyone choosing to use an unsupported OS does so at their own risk since an update could break something.

Thank you for your response Noel. To be clear, I wasn't trying to suggest that anyone had been intentionally mislead or having a go at Brandon, just that the information given was conflicting. I think that most people understand the risk element, but Brandon's response certainly made it look much less of a risk, whereas yours was a flat - don't bother it isn't worth it. No problem with that, but maybe a bit of a kisk in the teeth for those who took the plunge based on the information given from a company insider.  Forum users do not necessarily know that he is not a developer and therefore doesn't have all the knowledge / information with which  to make that statement. Brandon is very much the public face of cakewalk here on the forums, for which I'm sure we are all very grateful as he is always very reasonable and helpful, but because of this people will place a certain amount of trust in his opinions.

Unfortunately, coming right on the back of the misleading information re the buy X1 /X2 free promo, it really did seem that the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing there.

Thank you for clarifying the situation anyway.

What part of "not supported in XP" isn't clear here. Use at your own risk. Don't expect support (that includes patches).
