The Rebel
Hey everyone,
Been a while since I've posted anything. I just recorded something fun.
I recorded an acoustic guitar version of Cheap Sunglasses by ZZ Top.
I recorded all of the guitar, vocals, bass on my cell phone on a 4 track app.
There was a free drum app so I used it for the drum track.
Then I exported everything into Sonar 7XL and did the editing and mix down.
I'm amazed at the quality of the sound!
Now I can record anywhere anytime and drop it in my Sonar studio.
I wonder if Cakewalk has ever thought of creating an app for cell phones...
Enjoy!

Wow, nice job and what a cool way to bring it all together!  Fun stuff.  Long live the little band from Texas!

nice cover, Rebel.  covers of famous songs are very difficult to pull of well.

implementation of guitars is quite good, but the overall sound of the song needs some improvement, IMO.  everything sounds dull to my ears, especially the vocals.  they sound like they were recorded on a computer mic or on a dynamic sitting 6 feet from the vocalist - there's a lot of room sound and the overall sound is lacking in clarity and high end is missing.  the vocals themselves are good - no problems with pitch or delivery.

guitar playing is really good - but I think you need to record on something better than a phone.

just my opinion.  don't take it too hard.  throw it out the window if you don't agree!

Thanks guys!
I appreciate the feedback.
It was just something fun to do. I was curious to see what I could do with a cell phone app. I use the memo app to record quick ideas before they get away. I wondered if there was an an app for a recording studio and for $5 downloaded a 4 track. I was impressed. The technology is cool and convenient. There's limitations to everything.Obviously my Sonar studio is where I invest most of my time and effort. Hope I didn't offend anyone with my post. For me music is always fun and experimental both musically and technically!
Thanks for listening!

+1 to the above.   Performance-wise it comes off well.   But mix-wise it does sound like it was recorded as it was.   But for off-the-cuff/record-anywhere abilities, it's pretty cool.

Steve thanks for listening.
Glad you liked it. It was just a quick and dirty version I did as fun exercise.
Gotta love them boys from Texas!

Sounded like I was sitting in the control booth listening to a very dry, live recording on small monitors. It is what it is. Guitar sounds like it is gated somehow.
Having said that, I couldn't stop listening, there is a rawness that's often missing in some "produced" DAW music and I really got the low fi vibe that I think you were aiming for.

I think this is great as proof of concept.  Of course your phone mic won't give you a great recording, but as a way to get ideas down, why not?

Good performance.

I think it was a good sounding excellet performance recording, considering it was recorded on a cell phone. You should do a studio recording of this.....I'm a big fan of these tres hombres and you did a good job on it.....very nice performance!!

Next: Funky dogs and nasty kings!!

Hey fellow Rebel glad to see you enjoyed it and "got it".
I was going for a more raw stripped down sound.
I was very happy with the quality of the raw sound recorded from a cell phone.
I would never have thought it would be that good.
I put some chorus on the vocals and re-balanced the mix in Sonar and that was it.
Thanks for listening Jamie. I appreciate your comments!
Mesh, Thanks for listening and your kind comments. I've always been a huge fan of "That little old band from Texas"
Back when I used to play in bands I played a lot of ZZ. Never on acoustic guitar tho.
I'll have to give some thoughts to Nasty dogs and funky kings - you never know....
Thanks to everyone that has listened and posted.
This is one of the few outlets I have to get my music heard.
I appreciate and respect everyone's comments.
