PS has its own built-in latency - almost all convolution reverbs do. Just as Cake's LP mastering plugs. Convolution, esp. puts a lot of strain on the CPU. You may have to record at one latency and mix at another to releave the stress on your CPU.
Another thing I noticed on my old dual core system was having too many visuals (esp. the TC Near software for my interface) up and going would send my computer into drop outs. I had a basic dual monitor vid card. All those bouncy levels etc. seemed to put a bigger strain on an already stressed system. My new computer, not running so close to the edge on older projects runs just fine w/ everything up and going.
You just have to know your system and what will drive it to the cliff's edge. Either that or get a faster computer or more memory or a better sound card.
