Insert audio track                    (do not open take lanes)
copy/drop clip on track          (using blend old and new)
     copy another
       copy another
Open take lanes                                 (another menu!!!)
3 take lanes with clips     (Yea!!!)

Close take lanes
       copy clip to track

Open take lanes
clip is stacked on take 1     (if track did not have focus)

???????????????????
And:::

When the take lanes are open, clips CANNOT be dropped onto the "track." Only on the take lanes.

Which means a take lane has to be created first: another click.

This is not acceptable.

Dropping a clip on a track should default to creating a new take lane, whether the take lanes are showing or not.

Have I just not found how to change this "default" behavior?

That seems like it might be a bug. It doesn't make much sense for behaviour but I can confirm I see the same here.

I've only really used them for recording before so haven't noticed.

7 pm EDT:  UTC -4

I was not clear about the current time and zones and such.

You should be asleep soon. Or else not.

Based on what I read in another thread, what happens if you delete the lanes (not the clips), close lanes, and then open them again from the track?  I'm wondering if this would act as a "rebuild" of sorts.

Someday I'll actually have an internet computer in the studio for this kind of thing.

I don't understand.
Are you trying to do something - or trying to find out what doesn't work?

Why would you have take lanes open and try to drop onto the "track"? If you are trying to blend old and new by drag and dropping, why do you need take lanes?

Is a dropped clip a take?

Just wondering.

Why?

I can see why the OP would want or even expect that behaviour. It's not the way I work but it would be the 'intelligent' thing to do if a clip is dropped onto a track with lanes already open.

I certainly wouldn't expect it to hide behind an existing one any way.

I'd be happy for it to happen as the OP thinks it should as long as CW promise NOT to bring back the "rebuild layers" er... "feature", not without a major overhaul anyway.

How did you manage to say what I was trying to say in just one word?  :  )
