I usually record using simple old school techniques, but recent circumstances have altered my workflow (twins).  I need to sample my drum kit, and "play" it using a midi controller with pads. I want to have several velocity layers to make the sample as realistic as possible. I'm not sure what program/VST to use to make the samples, or what format to make them in. I'll also need a program that will play the samples. I'm not looking for something incredibly fancy-don't need to warp the sounds or anything, nor am I looking for something extremely expensive. I use Sonar X1 and Pro Tools 10. Not sure if a solution isn't embedded in these programs already. Thanks in advance for advice. Craig

normally you make em in wav.. and do them as separate hits. you just can record them in using sonar or even a simple wave editor. but as to what you do processing wise, thats up to you .. most sample cd's etc that I use have had processing done on them to make them punchy etc.


well you could use dimension pro if you want kits (or even session drummer) , does involve a  bit of text editing..but not tricky.. does support layers.. if you open up a drumkit "sfz" it'll give you pointers of what to do if your new to it.

there are loads of sources though for cheap samples done in decent studios etc. but you might find the session drummer etc ones useful

You might want to take a look at the Session Drummer Contents Kits directory. There you will find directories for all the drum pads in Session drummer. There are plenty of examples of how Session Drummer assembles it's wav samples. After building your wav files, cut and paste an sfz file as needed. The sfz files are plain text files.

Pro tools doesn't have a sampler ??????

I'll have to check out Session Drummer.  I've used it before with single samples per drum, but never with different velocity samples for each one.

I've never been able to accomplish anything MIDI wise in Pro Tools.  I'm so ticked off about their "new" delay compensation feature, I'd rather not use it.  What a joke!

If you want to create something that sounds good from scratch you need a sampler that does velocity layering and round robin (Several of the same samples for each velocity zone selected at random), NI Kontakt all the way for that.

I've done it with my old Gretsch power kit, it's a huuge job if you want it to sound good, and if you are a drummer used to real drums, a badly sampled kit is going to make you cringe, trust me.

I'd go with the session drummer like others suggested, some of the kits sound passable.
