Ok, I want to write some CAL scripts.  Searching X1's help turns up zilch.  Google turns up some 3rd party editor from Collusion Inc.  

Where is Cakewalk's programming reference for CAL?

You can create/modify a CAL script with any text editor. I have not looked for programming info in years. There used to be a few websites with some tips and guides.

You can't really engineer a program in a text editor; you need a programming environment.  Being able to set watches, and set through code, set break points, not to mention the very fundamental need to check syntax.


I suppose you could write a 10 or 15 line CAL script in a text editor, but anything moderately more complicated than that would be challenging to engineer without a proper environment.

So, where is CAKEWALK's CAL editor?

I suppose one could create an EMACS mode for CAL but I never bothered to do it. I do not recall ever seeing an official Cakewalk CAL Editor or Programmers Reference Guide but my experience only goes back to Pro Audio 9 and I have not looked at the Pro Audio 9 docs in a while.

I wonder how much attention from CW CAL has received in the SONAR days?

That seems wacky - how do people learn CAL?  If everyone writing CAL is learning from each other, how did the basic information get out there to begin with?  Syntax rules, function definitions, data formats, etc.?  I'm confused, how could there be no official programming guide, or manual, or anything?  
I read a thread about something called "CAL View" that was apparently an editor; it used to be available in SONAR, but I can't find evidence that it still exists in X1 and X2.

There must be some officially support way to develop CAL scripts.  This seems odd to me.

Yep, both CAL and StudioWare are still somewhat supported, but officially dead. Although, I still provide some coverage of them in my SONAR Power books. Just the basics, not an in-depth guide to programming.
