VRM is 48 K only, so chances are, in Sonar you may be at a different sample rate. I use spdif from my main Laptop with Sonar, then send spif to the VRM box. I have it tethered USB to another computer to open the VRM GUI for clients to select different rooms to hear on without affecting my main setup. Yeah I was bummed at first about no 44.1.

When using it with SPDIF input, the VRM box can go up to 192KHz.  When using as a USB interface the sample rate can be 44.1K or 48K.

As others have said, when using the SPDIF input on the VRM box, you will need to set your output of Sonar to the SPDIF outputs of the device your are using to send to the VRM box (in your case the Ultralight).  The reason that you cannot select Ultralite is that you have another device selected in the Audio > Devices tab of the Preferences.  If you uncheck all of the selections for input and output, you should see all of the greyed out choices become available.  Once you select the Ultralite, you will still need to route your outputs to the appropriate selection for the SPDIF outs on the MOTU.

Good point on the routing, Matt.  On the Saffire Pro 40 and the Saffire Mix Control Panel it was already set (at least on mine) so I had S/PDIF output on the Saffire Pro 40.  But on the Roland Octa-Capture, I had to set that in the Octa-Capture Control Panel to get S/PDIF output.

Thanks for the message - and I managed to finally route to the MOTU ok.   But now each time I plug the box in, I get a "USB device not recognised" message ... it worked previously, so no idea why I get this message ... I have a number of other USB devices, all working fine.   Any ideas on this one?

Depending on when/how it was disconnected the status may be corrupted in Windows. Plug the unit in and then go to the Device Manager. Look at the USB section and if there is an "unknown device" listed it is probably the VRM box. If this is the case, RIGHT click on the entry to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to also uninstall the driver. Then disconnect the VRM box and restart the PC. After Windows starts, connect the VRM box and Windows should detect and reinstall it.

Sorry guys to jump into the conversation, but its the only place I found on the net talking about VRM Box in content of Windows 7 64-bit. I have been using my VRM Box with WinXP for awhile, never a problem. Just upgraded to a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (SP1), installed the latest software version from Focusrite website (v1.2 for VRM Box), hooked up the box - it got recognized and led lit up. I can select different speakers types, etc., but there is not sound coming out of my headphones. I uninstall and re-install again, the same. Although I'm using FL Studio, at this point I can not get any audio outside of DAW. Tried playing video clip from YT - no sound, playing a regular mp3 in Media player - it actually halted it until I unplugged the box. I already emailed Focusrite support, and still waiting for reply.

Wondering if you guys can kindly recommend me what am I missing? Is there a trick during the install? Or special setting in Win7 x64? I have VRM Box selected as default playback device, but can't hear any sound :(

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip.  Turned out that the VRM box just won't work from the USB port where it was plugged in, but worked fine from another one ... not sure the reason for that, but seems its up and running now.

For me anyway, there is no special trick with Windows 7.  My problem was the USB device being not recognised.  If you get that OK, and the software is apparently working OK as well, maybe your problem lies in your audio routing.   Are you using the box as a stand along audio interface (just the USB connection), or using the S/PDIF connection?  If the latter, as it states in the thread above, you need your Master bus routed to your soundcard, and not to the VRM box.

Twister6, do you have the S/PDIF port that you are using activated?  That is an issue that was noted in an earlier post on this forum.  If the device you are using for S/PDIF is not the output device for your DAW, AND if the port is not activated in the device you are using for S/PDIF then there will not be any audio.

Thank you for replies!  I'm using it only for headphone output.  USB port was recognized, and it seems that driver was installed, but no audio from headphone output.  I didn't even get to DAW, just want for it to work in basic Windows environment :(  Is there a setup to enable a path of USB->headphone output?  Thanks!
