In the early church, only vocal music was considered appropriate for performance in a religious setting.  Instrumental music was considered profane.




And that's practically all I listen to these days - a bunch of albums by Harry Christophers and the Sixteen in particular, sacred music for choir. Such as -

Wagner is OK under the right circumstances ... his music, without the singing is OK ... check out how Werner Herzog uses Wagner in "Nosferatu" and it comes off quite alright ... and different, but I can not get into any of his operas and find them rather ... boring.
