I've been using Sonar x3 for a couple of years now. But now I can't get past 2 or 3 minutes and it crashes....fatal error

Should reinstall the whole bloody thing again?

What are you using for an Audio sound card ?

Random crashes need to be traced in a few ways. Start a new project with no plug ins and begin adding plug ins that you typically use one by one. More often than not its a plug in not playing nice but could also be a hardware conflict, driver conflict or an update (windows or video, exc)

There is no one thing that someone is going to say "oh ya I had a crash... So must be this".
The more info you can leave the better. I would start with the error message you got with the crash (you might find something in event viewer as well).

It seems very random. Sometimes it's right away. It happens on a random click. Here it just happened after I recorded a couple of measures and I had to reset the midi because the key stuck. So then I want to send the report but that causes an error and says it couldn't be sent. I just tried to send a screen shot in this forum and it caused an error. I'm beginning to worry about Cakewalk

so I guess you can't send screen shots?

X3 has been out of support for some time. I am not sure error reports from X3 are still accepted by their servers.

Ok thanks. I'm going to try the X3e update and see if that works.

That's very advisable, until Platinum (or the new era Artist, Professional, Platinum,  post X3) X3e was almost universally considered the best version to date.

Well so far it's X3e has been working well. Hopefully that fixed it. Thanks

It couldn't hurt applying the X3E patch.
But I wouldn't expect the X3E patch to solve your problem if you've been "running fine for a couple years" with X3.
and now suddenly started getting stuck midi notes and fatal errors.

Ok Thanks. You're right. It was very stable since last week but now today it started crashing again. I turned off the carbonite and the ESET in hopes it was that but I can't get 30 seconds before it crashes. One of the error messages was the following:
runtime error sonarSTD.exe  R6025 Pure Virtual Function Call

then also the usual crash dump and mini dump exception code  c0000096

anybody have a suggestion? buy a new program reinstall this one?????
