I haven't purchased X2 yet, but I have been looking at the videos quite a bit.  I really like layers in X1, 8.5 etc.  It appears that take lanes will take up a lot more real estate.  Can they be shrunk to very small sizes like layers can be?  I also don't like more room being taken up in the inspector.

A) they are selectable by track (see them or not,  you choose)
B) each lane can be sized independent of the others

pretty much as you'd like it to be.

When you resize a track does the take lanes all size at the same time?  The videos really don't show much of this.

Nope. Not in "normal operation" but I have not tried the "smart zoom" on tracks with lanes open yet so I can't say what happens then.

The track lanes don't smart zoom with the track, though resizing a track lane affects all lanes on that track.  The smallest you can make a track lane is double the size of a minimized track.

I really like the track lanes though there is certainly room for refinement.

If you use much automation, like in manual ducking, the take lanes are great

Wow, thats pretty large.  I have some tracks with 8 or 10 layers that are pencil thin.  Seems like we loose more real estate with every new feature.

Hey Rod,

I guess we see track lanes differently. That's not bad or good. Just different.

I would only use lanes for multiple takes (as I used layers) and then construct a single track from those many takes and kill all the unwanted fluff. To each his own, but if I thought to use lanes the way you do, I'd make each lane a track and then bus them to maintain one FX chain (if that is why you use layers over tracks, which is what I imagine you are doing).

Rod, I did not mean to be presumptuous in how you use layers, BTW. I was just expressing what I imagined you use them for.

As was mentioned you can make them collapse however I was kind of hoping the would behave graphically just like tracks. Seems weird they used a completely different way of handling them. That said though they are WAY better than layers... like... way better. Way.
