  • Has the Sonar X series had this affect on anyone else? (p.5)

I know it might seem like heresy to the OP () but, although I've tried, I just can't seem to get on with screensets;

Don't use screensets? I'm not even sure that's legal is it? I thought the boys from Cake came round and gave you a "good talkin' to" if you didn't use screensets and the PC. That's why I use 'em, I don't like 'em really but I fear for my life.

it may be down to the stuff I record more than anything though.

I use two monitors - my 24" is between my speakers, and I have a 22" balanced precariously (and secured with Blutak) on top of my my adjacent hifi speakers.

I basically only have the 24" monitor on for tracking and comping, and use them both for MIDI stuff (with the PRV open on the 22") and for mixing (with the TV and the CV open).

I'm thinking third monitor above my keyboards so I can be really lazy and don't even have to turn my head any more. That might make the mix a bit unbalanced though.

How did a genuine question on here about the X series reducing the number of screen monitors needed degenerate into it being pointed out that the screens shouldn't be placed in front of the speakers?

Oh yeah I remember......

I'm not worried anyway my speakers are in the screens, I've got four of  'em. (Speakers that is)

Actually I had been looking for a new monitor but the dang thing of it is is that if I get another monitor I'd have to sneak it by Audrey....

I've gone from 2x21" monitors to 1x27" monitor with the advent of screensets.  For a while I continued on with two monitors simply because I multi-boxed in a MMORPG I used to play, but once I stopped doing that, I gave the two 21" monitors to my step-son (he still games), and bought the one 27" monitor and all has been great.

You don't really need speakers anyway, I just draw all the notes in and whack it through Har-Bal.

computer monitors should not be in front of the plane of the near fields or you will get comb filtering as Mike suggests.

but it's pretty presumptuous to think that's what we all do or that our priorities are not for the sound.

I have 2 - 24" monitors between my speakers, but behind them in the plane of that triangle diagram.  I know where my sweet spot is because I have small mirrors (2" diagonal) mounted on my speakers.  when I can see my eyes in both mirrors, I'm in the right place for listening.

IF I need to edit WHILE listening, I have a wireless keyboard with me.  Long arms are not required.
Ditto.. i built an extension on the back of the desk for the monitors specifically for this reason.. and valued comment highlighted ;)

Wait a second you mean I can't have my monitors behind my monitors? What if I put my monitors in front of my monitors? Would that be OK? I know I'll just use ear buds. Are there any eye buds? I know I'll stack my monitors on top of one another with the monitors in between the two monitors or vice versa.

I have two 22" monitors for my desktop and, even though I love screensets, I still make full use of both monitors.  The one thing that has changed for me with screensets is that I find working with Sonar Xx on my laptop MUCH more bearable than before.

Each to their own. I found earlier versions of Sonar on a single monitor a nightmare for the way I like to work.
I think X1 introduced the idea to many that you may need to invest in a greater vertical resolution from a monitor than was previously recognized as being an essential requirement even to see the pro-channel inspector in it's entirety.
I can work comfortably on any application with a single monitor the size of the display required to run the first of the X series.

The fact that it prompted many to look at a minimum of a vertical 1200 pixel display may have helped in the perception that a single monitor is now all that's needed where two monitors may have been required before.

A dual setup is still helpful in many scenarios.  I wish I had a spare screen sometimes.

(p.s can someone explain to Mike that scoring studios have acres of screen real estate that doesn't compromise the listening environment.  He seems to have wandered down yet another blind alley, bless him!  Still, as long as he ends up convincing himself of something while he's here, that's all that matters.)
