  • X2 still has lost features from 8.5

I'm surprised that with X2 there is still no display of the record mode you're in. In every version since the DOS days, there has been a display (even on the transport) of the record mode: sound on sound, overwrite, or autopunch. Autopunch is diplayed but not sound on sound. The only way you can see what mode you're in or even change modes is to open the preference window. Yet with that window open you can't be playing back or recording, you must be stopped. A friend of mine installed X2 and said that this feature is still lost. I doubt if he's wrong, yet if he is, please let me know. From my thinking if I were programming an application, I'd consider it a rule to never lose any features, but only to add new ones. This makes me question whether Cakewalk has a commitment to old customers and whether they'll lose other features in the future. I've used every version since 1992 and for the first time am considering another program before buying X2. I'm still using 8.53, since X1 had some other stability issues in addition to lost features. Any other lost features?

One thing that I don't know why it was not included there is no method I can find to globally select MIDI track out puts.  It was possible in older versions before X1. With X1 and X2 only audio tracks can be globally sent to an output by holding ctrl and then select the out. This method has no effect with MIDI tracks.

In 8.5 and older you needed to select all and than select the MIDI port or synth you wanted them all to go to. Of course you could select a range of MIDI tracks too.

+1 for these requests.
BTW Gerry X1D is stable as a rock.

I hope these are being reported:

Are you sure John? It's working here on MIDI tracks and Audio tracks. IIRC there was a bug in one of the early X1's that stopped it working correctly from the inspector but that was fixed in X1c or d. It's working okay here in X2 as well.

It’s working here on both audio and midi tracks also. I’m using X1d.

I think it was about selecting the Track options from the menu.

IIRC I couldn't find out how to do it that way in the X1 demo, but there was another way to route them wholesale that I can't recall now.  I think it must have been a context menu on the inspector rather than from the main menu as before.

So what is the method for selecting bulk Track options now?

Select required tracks, hold ctrl key and change option. Works on just about everything from track controls through to inserting and deleting PC modules, even loading good ol' presets.

Thanks, Alex. I just added it to the feature requests. This issue was brought up numerous times in the forum after X1 came out. I hope that this is simply an oversight and not deliberate. I know they don't have some of the old programmers, who definitely thought things like this were very important. Important enough to add them to the transport even.

I was dismayed that the new programmers looked at 8.5 as a bunch of clutter to remove and got rid of all sorts of features. I know they've added some of those features back after a loud chorus of complaints. The way I use 8.5 it's very steamlined with no clutter. I've hidden any tools or icons I don't use often. Personally I think X1 would have been better to simply hide the tons of icons instead of eliminating them and then leaving it up to the users to customize the interface by adding important ones back in.

Does X2 have any customization? There were certainly a lot of things I would have liked to remove in X1. It's important to acknowledge that people use this program in widely different ways. Each having unique needs that can more efficiently be met with customization.

It does not work for MIDI tracks for me. It does work for audio tracks.
