  • Recording directly to a take lane mutes all other lanes, is this right?

Was just experimenting with the take lanes and discovered that when you arm a take lane and record onto it, all the other lanes automatically mute whilst recording. Sound on sound is selected in recording options, and the auto punch mute other takes option is off. Maybe i'm not seeing the intended purpose of being able to record directly to lanes, but i wouldnt think you would want all other takes to be automatically muted in every instance. Am I missing something here?

Interesting that no-one else finds this unusual, must be the way i work!

I'm digging the take lanes, but having a record facility on each is useless to me if you cant hear other lanes during the record process. Maybe a checkbox under recording options to enable or disable auto lane mutes?

Anyway thanks for listening to my one X2 complaint! Loving it so far otherwise.

I'm pretty sure there's a setting in Preferences for that.  I'm not in front of SONAR at the moment, but the wording should be related to takes, lanes, mute, etc.

If you use the record button on the main track to arm then you can hear any/all of the other lanes.  (Solo the ones you want to hear if you don't want to hear them all.)

@stevec Thats what I thought but not that i can find. @CoteRotie Yeah you're right that's the work around, but that take then ends up in a new lane, which to me defeats the purpose of having a record on each lane. Anyway no show stopper really, just an observation that doesn't make sense to me.

I've always disliked that previous takes weren't automatically muted in prior versions of Sonar unless you used punch in.  To me it makes no sense that previous takes weren't automatically muted.

I could see making it an option like it is for punch in.

On the last Webinar introducing X2, Brandon was doing several takes playing guitar.  They changed a setting so that the punch-in area was muted.  Brandon started recording before the punch-in just listening to his original take (so that bit wasn't muted), he started playing at the punch point where the original take muted, he looped round several times and did more takes, each time with previous takes muted.
I can't remember what the setting was, I thought it was in Preferences.  You could also see that the original waveform was going to be muted because it was displayed differently in outline only in the punch-in area.  Hope this helps ...

Millzy, the option you're looking for is in preferences/project/record. Look under "auto-punch" and you'll see a box for "mute previous takes". Is that what you were looking for?

Hey Danny, thanks for that but no I understand that I can do that for auto punch recording. I was refering to arming record on each take lane. If you go directly to a take lane and record on it, all other lanes are muted for that track - unless you record on the track itself then that take will create a new lane.

For example say I have a midi drum groove on T1, select a new lane (T2) and try to record midi cymbal crashes on it, T1 automatically mutes so you cant hear where to put your crashes. If I just arm record on the track and do it, no problem, the crashes will appear in a new lane. All works out ok in the end, I just dont know why you would choose to arm a lane for recording rather than just using the track. Thanks all for your comments and input.

Hi Millzy,

In the situation you explain in your last post I cannot understand why the audio you have in T1 (your MIDI drum groove) isn't on its own track anyway. It makes it sound like you are trying to get your lanes to behave like tracks.

As I understand it, I thought that a take lane would be something that you want to have more than one attempt at, say a guitar of keyboard solo for instance.
