Those kits you see are drum maps. In general, they direct the MIDI data to properly trigger drum hardware with specific schemes.
For the most part, they are not relevant to this discussion.
However, there are maps listed for some soft synths that you may find useful.
You should see one for Session Drummer, and some GM sets.
If you use one of these drum maps, your drums will be labeled in the PRV, and editing is much easier.
On a note specific to the DM6 kit, I didn't really like the sticks that came with it.
I got a pair of these
