Hi Kev, for me the song is about the vocal and I felt the instrumentation was almost too loud to the point of distraction, the vocal needed to be louder and more up front, I felt like I was being forced to listen to the instruments and I couldn't concentrate on the singer. Don't get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with the instrumentation in and of itself, just the balance was wrong.

So, which particular instruments are getting in the way? Drums maybe? I have tried it with the vocal dominating all the way through, but it sounded a bit boring, as the vocal does not vary much throughout the song. Instead I just tried to make the vocal more prominent in the second half of each verse (i.e. after the organ fades out).

OK, I've addressed all the issues brought up in this thread.  Many thanks to Band19, olemon, teego and rebel007 for pointing them out.  Here's the latest mix:

I like this a lot better... Good job! That organ still sounds killer. She's a bit wet on the chorus though IMO. I understand you're going for a different feel there. (the high instrument in my right ear) right @ 2:40, not sure if it's a flute or a woodwind, but it could come down a smidge (listened in the cans)

Oboes.  OK, I'll reduce it a bit.

I hope I haven't messed anything up.

Sounds pretty good to me. My only other suggestion would be to bring the intro up to closer match the vocal when it starts. The volume  jumps up when she starts singing and it startles you a little. I didn't notice that before but if you look at the wave picture file you can see the volume difference. Good job on it !

I'd increased the level on the first syllable of the vocal because I thought it lacked impact. Maybe I shouldn't have done this.

By the way, in the latest mix I made the vocal track mono in the final choruses where the mix is much busier than the early choruses and was getting lost. It seems to make a difference.

The vocal really stands out front now. There is nothing boring about it, it tells a story and is worth hearing. I always try to imagine what I would think if I walked into a venue, or even a studio control room, and heard the song being played live. What would I think of the mix, and would I be engaged by the song. I think you've got it a lot closer now.
