  • At this point would you guys say X2 is as stable or more stable than X1? (p.3)

@John... Duuuuuuuuude, let Win8 mature (or flop). Win7 Home and Pro will be supported through to 2018 and is tried and true. Then if 8 gets it's act together you have an easy upgrade path but if it flounders you won't be stuck with it and can move on to whatever MS releases to replace it. You're gonna need something before the first X2 patch methinks. I saw the bakers talking about how the current version of X2 will be fine for XP and Vista but as soon as they implement the touchscreen stuff it might bug right out on both OSs (please folks don't quote me on that it is just what I've gleaned from what they've said on the forum and may not be reality). Win 7 however is supported so you'd be safe on both the OS and Sonar fronts. I'm sure you've heard the Win7 arguments to the point of obnoxiousness at this point though but I'd hate to see you stuck. Anyway... finally got a mix I can master. Might be up on the songs forum later if all goes well. Cheers.

Beep I truly appreciate the concern you express. Believe me when I say I do know what I am doing.

No matter what you may have heard or read or even seen for yourself, Vista is a a great OS.  My only issue is the premature loss of support its getting.

When you and other talk about Win 7 being good I believe you. I have run it but for me it did nothing more than I got with Vista. I know few understand that but it is a fact. Really the two OS's are nearly identical.

Actually with Win 7 you actually loose things that came in Vista Ultimate. I will grant the performance may be marginally better in Win 7. But for me its simply not worth the upgrade to receive little in return.

Win 8 is nearly out and the way I have my system setup changing an OS is as simpl as popping in a new HD using drive drawers. My system drive is in front in a removable drive using a drawer with a cradle. I run XP Linux and Vista.

I have 5 HDs on the system. and 3 HDs in drawer cradles.

Never say Never !! the floor is open, no hardware support. you want hardware support irc.freenode.com ##Hardware

Did you know that Vista works with win 7 drivers? In fact its Vista that changed the driver types.  Win 7 uses Vista drivers or a case could be made that it does.

All the drivers I am running at present are Vista and Win 7 compatible.

Now Win 8 may require different drivers. Though it worked with my Vista drivers.

Like John, X1d has been pretty dang stable for me.  I've already had two hangups with X2 doin nothing more than inserting or deleting an effect and trying to close the console view.

As 2 still seems to have the same console and track jumping problems as X1, I would say its about the same...maybe after a release or two we will see these kind of things worked completely out.

Oh yeah I know you know what you're doing and as much as I rag on Vista I realize that it was the early releases that were the problem (I had to suffer through them at work and that's where my displeasure came from) and it did eventually become an extremely powerful and stable OS... but by then the name had been sullied in the consumers minds. Thus Win 7 getting pushed through and Vista support now being dropped well before its time. There just aren't enough people using it to make it worth coding to. Win7 obviously would not have been possible without Vista and I do believe you when you say it rocks out. The problem is it just ain't gonna be supported anymore and will probably just turn into a nuisance. I've seen good and bad reports in regards to Win8 and Sonar but I'm a very cautious fellow when it comes to computer stuff. It seems if I try to be even the slightest bit adventurous in my tech choices something screws up (thus this thread). I waited a goooood long time before dropping my beloved XP and I can say 7 really has stacked up quite well (however I do still like most of XP better because it's just easier to use to me). Just don't want to see my buddy get stuck with MSs latest experiment if it goes awry. Anyway I'm just rambling while I give my ears a rest before doing a quick master on my poopy project so don't mind me. I'm sure you have everything under control. Cheers, dude. ;-)

I think you will have a much better shot at stability if you stay all 64bit, including and especially all VSTs. I could be wrong but I think it makes a difference. Perhaps all 32 bit works as well, I don't know.

Wayyyyy more stable. I am actually using this daw more than I used to. I feel like I don't have to worry as much about a crash. Thank you cakewalk. I knew you could do it.

I must say I agree with John regarding Vista.
I still have a Vista partition on my studio PC along with, XP and Win 7 HDD. VISTA Ultimate x64 SP2 gets better DPC than either of the other OS and SONAR running under VISTA is much smoother. I only ended up going to Win 7 for a greater degree of future proofing not because of any performance issues.

I haven't installed X2 on that PC and not likely to as I'm without a studio or permanent home at the moment so stuck with laptop only. But guys don't be so quick to dismiss ViSTA. Once SP2 came out it was every bit that Win7 became.
