  • At this point would you guys say X2 is as stable or more stable than X1? (p.4)

I'm happy with X2 - no crashes yet. I'm a big fan of X1 and it would only occasionally crash on me - I expect a few crashes here and there with X2 as well. Time will tell. I've never heard of a crash free daw program.

I did have a head scratching quick groups moment. But that aside, I don't see me opening X1 again to do my work. Really liking X2. The audio engine is great, and the tools are great as well. I think X2 may be the daw other developers start chasing now.
On Vista64 here too John. I don't see a big need to change at the moment.

Oh yeah I know you know what you're doing and as much as I rag on Vista I realize that it was the early releases that were the problem (I had to suffer through them at work and that's where my displeasure came from) and it did eventually become an extremely powerful and stable OS... but by then the name had been sullied in the consumers minds. Thus Win 7 getting pushed through and Vista support now being dropped well before its time. There just aren't enough people using it to make it worth coding to. Win7 obviously would not have been possible without Vista and I do believe you when you say it rocks out. The problem is it just ain't gonna be supported anymore and will probably just turn into a nuisance. I've seen good and bad reports in regards to Win8 and Sonar but I'm a very cautious fellow when it comes to computer stuff. It seems if I try to be even the slightest bit adventurous in my tech choices something screws up (thus this thread). I waited a goooood long time before dropping my beloved XP and I can say 7 really has stacked up quite well (however I do still like most of XP better because it's just easier to use to me). Just don't want to see my buddy get stuck with MSs latest experiment if it goes awry. Anyway I'm just rambling while I give my ears a rest before doing a quick master on my poopy project so don't mind me. I'm sure you have everything under control. Cheers, dude. ;-)

I can't argue with this. I think you have it well understood. I built this machine to run Vista. I have run Win 8 on it and it works well with it. I am pleased to report an improvement in core loading with Win 8. Which is encouraging. I am not a fan of metro. Nor do I want touch screen ability on my desktop. I have a tablet and touch works great for it but I would hate it on my two wide screen monitors. I have a nice mouse and a lighted keyboard for interacting with programs.  MS needs to rethink their approach on this.

We shall see how win 8 pans out. None of the preview MS OS's ever were the same as the final product.

@John... Duuuuuuuuude, let Win8 mature (or flop). Win7 Home and Pro will be supported through to 2018 and is tried and true. Then if 8 gets it's act together you have an easy upgrade path but if it flounders you won't be stuck with it and can move on to whatever MS releases to replace it. You're gonna need something before the first X2 patch methinks. I saw the bakers talking about how the current version of X2 will be fine for XP and Vista but as soon as they implement the touchscreen stuff it might bug right out on both OSs (please folks don't quote me on that it is just what I've gleaned from what they've said on the forum and may not be reality). Win 7 however is supported so you'd be safe on both the OS and Sonar fronts. I'm sure you've heard the Win7 arguments to the point of obnoxiousness at this point though but I'd hate to see you stuck. Anyway... finally got a mix I can master. Might be up on the songs forum later if all goes well. Cheers.

Beep I truly appreciate the concern you express. Believe me when I say I do know what I am doing.

No matter what you may have heard or read or even seen for yourself, Vista is a a great OS.  My only issue is the premature loss of support its getting.

When you and other talk about Win 7 being good I believe you. I have run it but for me it did nothing more than I got with Vista. I know few understand that but it is a fact. Really the two OS's are nearly identical.

Actually with Win 7 you actually loose things that came in Vista Ultimate. I will grant the performance may be marginally better in Win 7. But for me its simply not worth the upgrade to receive little in return.

Win 8 is nearly out and the way I have my system setup changing an OS is as simpl as popping in a new HD using drive drawers. My system drive is in front in a removable drive using a drawer with a cradle. I run XP Linux and Vista.

I have 5 HDs on the system. and 3 HDs in drawer cradles.

Hi John...

I'm with you here... I've got Vista 32 on a core2duo that's been running well with both 8.5.3 and X1dEx... and all the versions before it... and I'm just finishing setting up an interim machine here that has Vista 64 on a Quad... It too runs fine. With the various support I do for others it seems to me that Win7 is mostly the same as Vista... There are a few items but nothing major here...

I also have Vista 64 running on a Mac Pro with dual Xeon-Quads and X1 runs just as well there, but only using 1 of the processors, so I must get Win7Pro this week to gain the use of the second processor for Win/Sonar...

What MS needs to do is have some kind of "Win XP/7" view. It sounds like the guts of it are way more powerful but the UI does not take into account how 90% or more of us work... particularly in professional settings. I have absolutely no use for touch screen capabilities and in fact just sitting at a computer puts me in epic pain after a while. I couldn't imagine having to reach over to my screen every time I want to do something. I know that isn't necessary but the UI seems to be designed that way and awkward to navigate the way we are all used to. I would like to get one of the Win8 tablets just to play around with it and from what I've seen it will be right at home there but it just isn't looking like they thought about us peripheral addicts when they designed Metro. Seriously if they made it so I could use 8 with Win 7 or XP UI I'd likely upgrade after I see it's stable and secure, but as is no way... and yes I'm just blathering because I taking another ear break. Thanks for all the input on X2, guys. Keep 'em coming. At this hour it ain't gonna happen until tomorrow anyway. Songs coming along surprisingly well though. This LP-64 stuff is pretty intense. ;-)

I think I may jump in tomorrow, can still get Boxed versions, right? I won't attempt without, but like I said, 8.5, and X1 have been stable for me, so I'm hoping all will be fine. Thanks for all the info guys, we'll see if Betsy(puter), can hang with all 3! Wish me luck.

I have had only 1 problem with x1 - it was a known bug.  I have had one white screen so far over 3 days.  I was inserting a waves reverb (latest version WITHOUT dongle) while the song was runing and Sonar ended.  I noticed something different - cakewalk had captured the error and asked if I wanted to send it in. I answered yes - and I recieved a error report id in the email from cakewalk.  Darn good if you ask me.

Best Regards,
