  • I like the X2 interface improvements but man is it crash-prone (p.2)

subtlearts XP is unsupported and untested with SONAR X2 so also any issues that are XP specific will not be addressed. Also going forward future updates may not even install on XP so its in your best interest to use a more current OS like Win7 or the upcoming Win8.

Hey Noel, thanks, I was aware of that so will not be asking for support on this XP install; I'll be using X2 on a newer Win7 machine for the most part, but I still have XP on this old desktop and thought it would be interesting to see if the new beast would run. It does, but it's more 'genius' than 'seamless' so far... however, I'm probably not the only one around here with an XP machine still in service, so it might be interesting for others to get a bit of a headsup on the state of things in terms of whether X2 is usable under XP or not.

I did manage to get a mix kicked out, but there were quite a few random crashes doing things like opening the multidock... so given that no-one will be testing or working on these issues, I'll probably plan on upgrading the OS on this machine at some point if it looks like I'll be using X2 here. It's a tradeoff - the XP/X1 combination has been pretty good here, but after a few months working on X2 I expect it will be tough to go back - that's usually how these things go!

No worries, just giving you guys a heads up about XP and X2. Having to support Windows 8 means no more XP. There are significant changes and Microsoft's runtimes themselves will simply not install on XP. X2 has been widely tested on Win7 and is very solid.

Hi Noel,
Does this also apply to Vista Ultimate 32bit?
Being a hobbyist, I'm in the plans of building a Win7 64 bit machine (depending on available funds) and wanted to know if I should purchase the X2 upgrade or just wait?

I realize there won't be any X2 support, but I don't know how close (or far) the Vista OS is with Win7?

As of today X2 loads and works fine in Vista which is similar to Win7 in many ways.
However once we do Win8 support the multitouch features will only work on Win8 and Win7. Microsoft actually blocks that stuff out on Vista. I'm not certain how this will pan out myself until we finish the work but there is a possibility that Vista will still load X2 (no official testing or support though).

Install Win 7 X64, upgrade to 8 when it comes out. 8 is great.

Ha! Thanks for the info, now it makes more sense why Vista is not supported. I plan on running Vista for a while yet. I am certainly not buying Win 7 this close to the Win 8 release. I am thinking new DAW with Win 8 next year.

I just tried out X2 Studio for about a minute, and it crashed. I didn't do anything fancy. I opened an existing (X1) project to see what it looked like, clicked around a bit, then it crashed.

Window7 32-bit and X2 and yes crashprone. Never had any problems at all in X1.
