Just want to make sure I'm using the best possible approach for remote recording away from my main DAW.  I've got a working project that has multiple tracks/effects in my main studio DAW.  I'm heading out of town to record some pedal steel and I'll be using my laptop and Presonus 192 interface.  Here is what I have done, and plan to do before and after the session.

1. get my project on my studio DAW sounding how I like it, and how I would envision the pedal steel wanting to hear it during the recording, and bounce it to a stereo track using bounce to tracks.
2. Erase/delete everything but my new stereo mixdown track and save as a bundle file with a new name
3. copy bundle file from studio DAW to jump drive and load onto my laptop
4. open bundle file on laptop and record pedal steel
5. Here is where I'm not sure the best way to proceed....do I just save the newly recorded pedal steel file as a bundle and copy back to my main studio DAW, and than open up the new pedal steel file and my old project file and copy/paste back into project. Or do I somehow export/import the pedal steel tracks into the old project? I just want to make sure I get everything put back together locked and synced.  I recall being able to export tracks as time-stamped files..maybe they were call broadcast wave files?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. This guy is killer pedal steel so I want to make sure I do it right the first time :)

1-4 would work but what if, for some reason, the mix turns out not be to adequate for the situation. Why not
1a) bounce the tracks as desired then archive all the other tracks and bypass any bus FX Racks (this step may not even be necessary)
2a) forget about bundling instead use "Save As" with "Copy all audio with project" enabled to a folder on the flash drive
3a) copy the folder onto the laptop and verify the project shows up as expected
4a) record pedal steel
This way the entire project will be available on the laptop should you need it
 
When back at the studio
5a) perform 2a except the source is the laptop
6a) perform 3a except the target is the studio DAW
The entire project is back on the Studio DAW with pedal steel added

Isn't it a pity to have to go out of town to get some steel tracks?
There just aren't enough around.
 
I traded a guy a laptop for a student model when laptops were more expensive.
Do think I can play it?   My cat is more proficient at those sounds that I am on that confounded mix of wires and pedals.

Thanks Scook for the advice.  I was just trying to minimize any extra load on my laptop. If I archive all my tracks they shouldn't tax the computers performance? If that's so I'll do that - as you mentioned, if the guy wants to tweak something in what he's hearing as he's recording I can always open everything back up, make a few quick tweaks, and bounce back down to a new stereo mix and re-archive the rest. That way I'm just working in one project that I move back and forth between laptop and desktop DAWs.
 
Just curious - what is the difference between saving as bundle vs saving all audio with project? It sounds like the preferable way would be as you recommended - "copy all audio with project"

It is like the tracks do not exist. SONAR ignores archived tracks.
 
A bundle makes a copy of the project file and concatenates the audio referenced in the project to it. The "Save As" function copies the project and all the referenced audio to the folder specified. To use a bundle, it must be parsed by SONAR back into a project file and audio.  "Save As" eliminates the need for packing and unpacking the bundle and tends to be less error prone.
 
Using bundles to copy/backup projects became redundant when per-project audio folders were introduced in 2004.

And Bitman - I'm down in the Carolina's so you don't have to travel that far to find some decent pedal steel and mando players :)  It's easy to make those things sound pretty bad but when you find someone who knows how to play it - wow - it takes everything a notch up :)

Very good advice as always from Steve. ANd I'm glad he advised you about not using Bundle files, To many post here where thoses became corrupted when re opened. 
 
Audio takes up very little CPU horsepower. My Laptop is 1/4 the specs of my desktop. 
 
I work with a Laptop for live recordings and what I do is use the Project more or less as it is in my main DAW. 
Only differance is I will freeze the synths just to make sure they play the same. I try and keep my laptop synced with all updates and plug in vst's but things happen. 
Never had an issue. It's also nice to use the same interface if you can. I will switch to my Tascam but Sonar has no problem swapping my 6i6 for the us1641.
