  • How to Comp in X2?

Has anyone unlocked the secrete to comping on X2?

I understand takes and loop recording.
I understand Shift space-bar to audition a section.
I understand  soloing an entire take track.
but....
How do you select regions from each take to use as a composite?

Thanks in advance...
The help file was not too helpful...

There's no "comping" per-say in the sense you're thinking of... however you can achieve a similar  effect with the Mute Tool by holding down CTRL when making a time selection over a clip in a take lane.

When holding CTRL, it will mute the all other lanes in the track that overlap, in time, with where you're clicking and dragging. Give it a shot in a scenario with multiple lanes stacked up upon one another.

Thanks Ryan

Although it is not what I was use to in Sonar (or other DAWS), it does work fine.

It is a little clumsy to change between select/smart tool to audition a section and the mute tool to isolate a section of overlapping  audio.

Please consider perhaps a click ( or double click) on the region that you are solo auditioning ( via Shift space bar) as a way to  mute the other takes. This way a comp can be made in one smooth work flow.

The collapsed takes ( in the parent track)  also does not represent the composite, so you can not see the composite without unfolding the takes.
Please consider a composite view  in the parent track.

Thanks

Definitely. I agree that some comping stuff would be cool.

This might sound like crazy talk, but given the current implementation what you could do is this:
1) Make sure you're set to the Mute tool and not the Erase tool in the Control Module
2) Switch to the Smart Tool since you'll probably be using that most
3) On your computer keyboard hold down the F10 key and then hold the CTRL key at the same time. Make sure you're holding them.
4) Make your edit
5) Release the F10 key and CTRL key.

When you hold keys like this for switching tools, they'll revert to the previous tool upon the upstroke of the key. So pressing the key switches to that tool indefinitely, but holding and then releasing the key switches to it temporarily. Snap and Snap Override work the same way with the N key... it's pretty cool if you're just going to a tool for a single edit.

Hmm F10  + Ctrl,  Then Shift  + Space Bar

A bit tricky...  Also see my comments above on the composite view...

Cakewalk was one of the first DAWS to implement  composite recording over 10 years ago.
Hate to see a slip in functionality, but I am sure you guys  have it on the near "to do " list.

Thanks again...

Hire an intern for the shift + spacebar part of it? :)

You can isolate clips using the Smart tool. You don't need the Mute tool.

I'm not in front of X2 at the moment, but if it hasn't changed from X1... just make your selection with the Smart tool and then either right-click and choose Isolate Clip(s) in Layer (could be called something different in X2) or just press CTRL + 1.

I'll have to check on this in X2 when I get a chance... not working on that chapter in SONAR X2 Power! yet.

Yep
That works Scott!
One step better .... but IMHO still needs some attention...

Good call! Still two buttons required though! You only win if you can do it with less buttons. ;)

Hey Ryan,

Well, you could always reassign it to a one button keybinding.

Ha! I win!

Just kidding... we're all just here to share the knowledge.
