Initially when I loaded a project into X2 the Master Bus and Master Output showed a level on the meters even with the project not playing.
 
Moving the master bus fader or master output fader made the level go up and down and produced some crackling from the speakers.
 
I went into Preferences/Audio/Driver Settings and enabled the 64bit engine and the problem went away completely.
