That's it yeah....is there a way you can get SPAN to hold that 2nd spectrum line as it does in the original Span? As I have it now it draws the line and holds it during the song but when the song stops the line disappears.

I'm doing this from memory (I'm about to boot my DAW though).  I seem to remember there were some things you could click on to do that - or at least to create a snapshot.

Span comes with a manual ya know ;)    I know some people seem to be against using them (for what reason I have NO clue) but they are useful.

I don't know.  But I"m at my DAW now, so hang on a bit I'll see if I can find the answer for ya.

Ah here - this should help:

Righto....I just installed the original...I think I like that one. I had that new one on my old machine but never used it. But it'd be good to know how to make it work like the old one. Oh right...thanks. I looked for that manual on my pc but couldn't find it.

I just quickly went to voxengo.com and grabbed it for ya.

They seem to put a lot of their manuals online.  And I love manuals.  They teach me lots ;)

I do think the new one works the same - and the latest update seems to have improved on some things.

I usually use Nugen's Visualizer on my master bus and float it on my 2nd monitor along with the Console View and Synth Rack.  So it's right there always.

But then I'll throw Span on mixdowns or specific tracks to take peeks when need be.

Span is very good, for sure.  And, as we know, free.

And, oh right - you're welcome ;)

...wicked

This video is Live-centric, but describes how to configure SPAN using groups and multi-channel I/O:

Check it out
It turns out that I'm too impatient to watch a 13 minute video to get 30 seconds worth of information.  So...I'm going to imagine that the guy did something like this...

(Note that this makes use of SONAR's sidechain feature...)

In broad brush...

  • Put an instance of SPAN2 in your master bus.
  • Go to each track of interest and insert a send to one of the 3 stereo inputs that SPAN exposes.
  • Go to the routing page in SPAN and enable the inputs C through H.
  • You should be able to then select each of the inputs (one at a time) as an underlay along with the overall master analysis.
Yes, it's a bit of trouble to set up...but it works.  I tried out BlueCat's tool a one point...which is interesting...and more flexible.  But it kinda suffers from the same deal where the setup takes so long that you become uninterested in the punchline.

On the other hand...this is an interesting case for the use of the newer SPAN incarnation.  I too was of the opinion that the increased screen real estate requirement was a good argument for using the older tool...but that might change.

I'm gonna use the original Span anyway. I only want it to do one thing and it's too much of a gin around on the new one to make it do that one simple thing.

Well, frankly, Span 1 was terrific anyway.
So yeah - go with what works for ya!

True...and I know how to use it without having to read the manual!
