  • Anyone using an i7 Ivy Bridge CPU PC? (p.2)

Don't worry about the integrated graphics. They are actually quite good these days, you can even game on the integrated chips, though at lesser detail levels and frame rates. They are not the crap from the P4 days.

However if you put in a dedicated card the integrated card will simply not be used. On the P series boards, it cannot be active and so will simply be shut off. So there is no problem having a chip with one even if you don't desire to use it.

There's also no way to not have one on the reasonably priced chips. Only the E series chips (and Xeons) have no integrated graphics and you probably don't want one of those are they are pricey.

In terms of performance the Ivy Bridge is fantastic. About 10-15% faster per clock than the Sandy Bridge, which itself is just amazingly fast.

.7ms on its own means....drumroll...what?

No offense, but I have no idea which/what one you mean?
Bob
No offense taken. It's the mixing latency in Sonar. See the link below.

More thanks guys! The Sandy-E 3930K looks great, but is pretty pricey at $569. After more thought, I am leaning toward either an Ivy Bridge or the Sandy-E 3820 (both around $300) and put $ in more RAM and a SSD for the C drive, and replace the other SATA HDs with SSDs as they get larger/cheaper. I've always had great success with the Gigabyte boards, so I'll probably look into one of those with 8 RAM slots. 64GB of RAM would be amazing for the sampler instances! Hey Bob - I just noticed you are a lefty player and I am too, so I figure we must think alike ;)

Thanks guys. The basic resolution graphics is probably fine for me, except that I do run two monitors, and I am guessing the onboard won't support that. I was also looking at the 6-core Intel chips, which also have a larger cache, but they get up to 2x the price of this one. Grum - what motherboard are you using? I usually go with a GigaBit or ASUS.

Sorry for the late reply - I haven't been around!
I have an Asus Sabretooth Z77, mainly because it looks like it could survive a small war plus it has two fans built into it, which I thought was rather cool (in both ways).
I also like my cpu cooler - it may be a little garish but it works .

Grum.

Thats very good,input:1ms,output:1.5ms,RTLatency=in+out+ mixing latency:0.07ms= 2.6ms,though I notice you dont have "64 bit Double Precision" ticked, any reason?,as even though you maybe running the 32bit version of X1,in W7x64,ticking this box can give greater stability supposedly.

Also is your "Lynx 2" PCI,or PCIe?,as you mentioned your running an i7 3930k Sandy E,and lots of peolpe have been unable to use PCI,as "most"of the PCI slots on motherboards newer than March last year, only have a PCI to PCIe bridge, meaning the PCI bus is NOT native[and "can" cause hassle],but some ARE using the "bridged" PCI slots with NO trouble, which are YOU?

I plan to upgrade to socket 2011,maybe,but of much interest is the "Lynx 2",as it's known for great low latency, may I enquire how you hook it up,meaning, what's your "signal path"?,meaning,do you use a console,or a mic pre setup,as I'm quite confused as to what"else" is necessary, when hooking up a PCI/e card like the famed Lynx 2,especially if one only want's a few "mic/XLR in's",as opposed to a full on desk etc etc?

Any explanation,would be really helpfull.

Thanks
Bob

Ha yeah maybe?,I used an extremely modified Ibanez RS135 from 1984 until, the Epihone Les Paul Custom seemed OK in 08,and I nabbed one of those[though the pickups are pretty av.]then last year[join date] I got my first REAL Left Handed Gibson Les Paul Studio-Wine Red,which sounds great, but without binding is SO SUPER FRAGILE,Iv'e banged it up unbelievably badly,in just over a year LOL

It's cause I'm so used to "almost" unbreakable "strat" type guitars, and copy guitars with 3mm of Epoxy Resin coating everything, this Gibson dents, just by looking at it almost!

By the way,I realised the ONLY part left from the old Ibanez is the body wood[and even that is totally been re-shaped to have the "strat" curvature/hip cut out's+its bare basswood with only wood stain]and the "Ibanez Neck Plate",EVERY other part has been changed, also I couldn't believe the Gibson "Volume/Tone Pots" are RIGHT HANDED!,I thought an expensive L/H guitar would have it "counterclockwise" which I'm so used to with my Ibanez, and the Chinese Epiphone has it,but the Gibson is for a Right Handed Player!

Ive already got some CTS "reverse taper" pots[yes right handed people-THERE IS SUCH A THING AS "LEFT HANDED POTS"]but I'm a little afraid of changing them myself, since my soldering is appalling!

Anyway,it's good there are lots more LH guitars around[always way more $$$ though]my LP was less than in a store HERE,but wayyy more than a RH version from Guitar Centre!
Cheers

Bob - that is interesting and I did not realize the Ivy Bridge was 2 or 3 chan memory vs the 4 chan of the Sandy-E. I might look at an i7 3930K instead. If you've heard of a good matching Motherboard for this please let me know. I am curious how the Ivy Bridge chips would stack up on the ADK benchmark tests though, too bad they are not included on there yet. The i7 3930K is still quite a bit more $$.
Check out the ASUS MOBO in my sig. The whole rig is unbelievable. Mines watercooled.

I have a new laptop here. A Dell Inspiron 17R. It has a mobile i7 at 22nm. I'm wondering if I would tax that machine (as it only has the onboard Intel HD4000 graphics) if I could tax it with too much graphics... ). All things being equal. A great laptop with the ability to expand using the msata slot (for a small SSD drive). The more expensive 17R SE can even be expanded to the MSATA and two 2,5 inch harddrives. I only miss a pci express slot. But this machine does have 3 USB3 connectors. Wich is pretty awesome.. And with it's hyperthreading on it shows the OS 8 cores. Wich is pretty impressive.

Do you mean "overtax the onboard graphics" by using Sonar/Plugins?

Never,I have a dell 2011 XPS L502x with a S.B. i7 2630qm,and the Graphics card-Nvidea GT540m causes DPC latency spikes[not in the RED-over 1000us,but Yellow]and I disable the Nvidea in "device manager" and ONLY use the HD3000 graphics with my laptop with Sonar, and totally No Problem, the HD4000 even has the ability to run "3 Screens" whereas my HD3000 could run 2 max....don't give it a second thought.
