  • Anyone using an i7 Ivy Bridge CPU PC? (p.3)

I recently built a new PC, Gigabyte Z77X UD5H motherboard and i7 3770 CPU.  I'm using the Intel HD4000 graphics and no problems with Sonar or other applications.  I get 6.5 score for the two Windows Experience graphic parameters.

Bouncing to clips, which could take a small amount of time with my old Q6600 CPU machine now is almost immediate with the new system.

Mouser, I'm using an ASUS Sabertooth Z77 MB with and i5 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge) 3570K proc, 2 SSD drives (C: for OS and D: for Programs (Sonar X1)) and a 2TB Hitachi 6Gbps E: drive for Sonar Projects. Runs fairly cool between 27c idle and 40-45c running. Ivy bridge procs run a little hot anyway. 16GB of DDR3 memory. I use a ATI Radeon HD 5450 which is adequate for dual monitor support. I use an LG 32" HDMI for my primary display and Viewsonic 20" DVI for my secondary. Looking to replace my secondary with another LG 32". It's between that or a Roland A-800 Pro MIDI KB controller. Also, all these components are stored in a Silverstone SST-LC13-E case which is rack mounted in an SKB rolling 4U rack (Studio on Wheels :)). What's really interesting me about X2 is the improved audio engine. I'm trying to use this at live gigs as well as the studio. Right now, I lug around my 32 channel Behringer board and hardware (compressors, FX unit, EQ, etc.) Even though Cakewalk doesn't recommend using Sonar in a live situation, it would sure be so much easier. I tried using Sonar X1 in a live situation on a i3 laptop and as I added effects to the vocals, the latency killed me. Luckily I had my board in the car as a backup. Hope some of this helps, Ciao, Gio

Grumbleweed, I have the same MB with an i5 3570K Ivy Bridge. How is that Venom CPU cooler working for you? I have a Silverstone Lascala SST-LC-13-E case. Already has dual 80mm fans on the rear. I'm not sure whether the Venom will fit.

Middleman,

Your 6 core 3930k shows up as 12 CPUs in Sonar - so just for clarity, you have dual 3930k 6 core CPUs, right?

Or are you saying a single 3930k 6-core CPU shows up as 12 CPUs in Sonar?  If so, does it also show up as 12 CPUs in Windows task manager?

Thanks
Russ

i7s have hyper threading, so a 4 core has 8 threads and a 6 core 12 threads. Apparently there is an 8 core i7 in the pipeline with 16 threads. I am hoping the 6 core prices will fall when that one comes out.

If you want dual processors you have to go with a Xeon processor.

I notice you dont have "64 bit Double Precision" ticked, any reason? I just pulled up this page to respond but haven't really needed it as the system is extremely stable.

Also is your "Lynx 2" PCI,or PCIe? PCI but I will be moving to the Lynx Aurora which is PCIe later this year.

do you use a console,or a mic pre setup? Everthing on the Lynx (4in 4out) is connected to a patchbay which can a take a feed from one of several devices i.e. Neve Portico 5012 or GT Brick DI, or even a feed from external syths, all for tracking. I reroute when mixing to pass certain tracks to external compression or FX to mix print ( I am on a jehad against plug ins) . Then I rearrange things to sum out to the Portico preamp followed by a Portico 5043 compressor for the final print.

so just for clarity, you have dual 3930k 6 core CPUs, right? As Glyn stated its a single processor but the 12 threads are exposed as seperate cores in Sonar X1

OK, I just placed the order for all my new system parts. Some great deals on Newegg.com as usual for this stuff. I decided to go with the Sandy Bridge-E 3820 i7 chip and an ASUS P9X79 Pro MBoard, 32 GB of 1600 RAM, and a SSD for my C drive. Hopefully I'll have SONAR X1 up and running on the new Win 7 x64 system very soon! I also went ahead and placed my Pre-Order for the SONAR X2 Pro upgrade while I was at it :) Thanks for all the input guys. I'll post again once I've got things running with any good/bad news.

I dont know about the stores in the "Yes Universe",but Intel CPU prices, don't seem to drop here even when they're 2 years old.

Thanks,I'm always intrigued,as to how others go about hooking up their gear, due to the multitudes of options at times, which Iv'e been finding confusing.

My CPU runs in the mid forties which is pretty good AFAIC.
