Bat, I did go back as you and others suggested and turn up some high end (gentle and wide) on the bongos and bumped them up a dB or so.  That work better now to my ears.  Tiny changes that smooth things out, some.  Thanks for the suggestions.  I kept the strings, tho ;-) 

Loving the guitar solo. Seriously slick, smooth track. 

I've found mixing such a sparse arrangement to be a real challenge. Keeping it open but filling the spectrum isn't easy. You nailed it!
