Hi Guys
Not really sure where to put this so have put it in Computers and Software.

I have an old (but almost brand new!) Mac PowerMac G5 – purchased it about 10 years ago for some projects, that turned into one very quick project, and then basically never used it much – I have a version of the Korg Synth package on here and use it as a “synth” occasionally.
But really it’s not getting used – looks fantastic and works perfectly.

Is this worth upgrading (if indeed it is possible to upgrade operating system / ram etc) so I can purchase and use Logic.
I really am pretty ignorant re Macs having been a PC user all my life.
Full Spec
Mac OS X v 10.3.9
 1 x CPU
1.8 GHz (Powermac G5 3.0)
1 GB DDR Sdram
512kb cache on CPU

All / any advice gratefully accepted!!
Cheers
Nigel

Nothing current will run on it since it is a PowerPC system. Apple changed over to Intel processors some years ago and all support for PPC has been discontinued. New OS upgrades, software, etc don't work on the old systems.

Also as a practical matter it is very, very low performance compared to today's systems. It is the technological equivalent of a Pentium 4 or Pentium D (despite Apple's marketing, the PPCs weren't any faster than Intel's parts, there's a reason they switched). CPUs these days are at least an order of magnitude faster on average when it comes to floating point calculations, maybe more in some cases.

Thanks for that  - have to admit thought that may be the answer!!
Well it does look pretty so I suppose I could keep it as  a museum piece......
Its interesting as I do have a couple of older PC's that I have upgraded over the years and they still work OK - might be  a little slow but still good as slave / back up machines etc.
Cheers
