The Russians were thinking about EMP a long time ago. You may find this of audio interest.

I hope I'm not going too OT by saying this ,

There are plenty of places in the world today that we see on the nightly evening news that depict society in various states of social and economic disadvantage compared to how many of us here on the forum live ...
War torn places that involve refugees , Country's of extreme poverty where they don't even have the basic necessity's of life meaning clean water , proper shelter , renewable food resources , decent medical attention / proper health care, a healthy economy and any other number of things that many folks can innocently take for granted , or even have a strong sense of entitlement towards   ..

Throughout the course of human history , History has proven time and time again that a flourishing society can be rendered non relevant and be taken down due to various social , environmental and or political/ religious acts of human and non human acts ...

Walk into any Museum and you may see things from the Caveman era , The Mayan era , The Roman Era , artifacts from Egypt , The American Indian . those ex's are just a very small example of thriving cultures and era's of society that have only a trace left of their original power and strength ...

Taking it a step further when you factor in War and social upheavals it is very easy to see the the world has changed drastically in the last 200 hundred years . On many fronts

I was born at a time where I had missed many things of the world that my parents and grand parents had inflicted upon them ....
Honestly I have had it kind of " cushy " compared to them in many areas ....
There are days when I feel that I am sitting on a powder keg that may blow anytime now

I have watched society change to the point where I am very concerned about a lot of things that are going on .
Rather than getting into the details of my concerns , lets just say I choose to embrace to the best of my ability to live my life in such a way as if today may be my last day on earth ....
I am not a fear based person , even though I have done battle with my own demons I have created ...
I have learned to feel empathy towards folks in a similar boat ....yet it is their responsibility to learn how to paddle their own canoe ...not mine ..

I think what I may find scary about this topic is that everything can change in the flash of a moment
An Individual has a lot of control as to how they choose to live up to a point , Yet in truth so much of life itself is not within the control of the individual

all the best ,

Kenny

When I said 3 hrs without shelter..... think cold rain in the woods.... I was referring to people who are not dressed adequately for the conditions. Obviously if you are layered and have a water proof shell, you will be just fine. My thoughts were to to hikers dressed for a nice warm sunny day and get caught in a sudden storm.

What Dave said about analog devices is interesting because I had heard that there were issues surround some of the early atomic bomb tests with the old gear they had back then being affected by the pulse form the blast.

I do not believe there is a real risk of an EMP attack at all. Especially from countries like North Korea which my brother in law thinks is imminent. My knowledge of such is getting dated by now but still the technology and money to develop it is with people that's had it for a while. I Am worried about EDM!!

Hi,

Based on my experience in Brazil, I would say that the big city folks will be hosed! They would probably go kill each other. I, in the country, in the middle of nowhere, would have plenty to hunt and eat and enjoy ... no electricity, but that's OK ... still having some fun!

J , I'm gonna have to give it more thought before I do a counterpoint ...
I think Herb hit a few key points ..
Kenny

There may not be a "counterpoint". Not from you...

J

Please explain , I have been super busy doing music and creating videos ...
I'm not exactly sure how to interpret your not from you comment

Kenny

Oh, nothing bad.... I just meant that if there is a counterpoint it would be from someone else. I think we agree and also Herb. Sorry, I meant that as a compliment. Lost in translation... I worded it poorly.
Point/counterpoint... I see you as on the "point" side, lol.

A year ago I would have said this is all just typical paranoia. But then I saw the CyberWar Threat documentary on PBS and then an interview with Ted Koppel. I bought his book, Lights Out, and I read about half of it. I can't stand to finish it. It's very worrying.

But there's good news. The additional sanctions against N. Korea include inspection of cargo ships. And the proposed federal budget includes a big increase in funds for protection from cyber threats. Knowing these things helps me get back to making music.

I was a failed Hippie too but really I was one of Zappa's phony Hippies (popping up in every town... We're Only in it For the Money) I made it to SF in '68 for a few days but joined the "counter culture" in 1970. I was just there for the party. It was one heck of a party too!!!
...

Seems like a crock to me ... we were hippies for the free sex and dope ... couldn't have fun with them girls if you looked straight!
