I try to stay fit by utilizing an elliptical trainer 30 minutes at a time at least 4 days a week. I also perform some ab exercises as well as light weights and stretching.
However, it seems like I'm not seeing any results. Meaning, I just had to get a new belt because the old one no longer circumvents my girth.

It is virtually impossible to exercise away excessive food intake. The exact numbers depend on primarily your weight, but as a rough estimate you will use a bit over 500 calories by doing high level aerobic activity for one hour. At 3500 calories per pound of fat, you would need to do seven hours of exercise to lose a pound in a week. Or you could reduce your diet by 500 calories per day to get a similar result. That would be the equivalent of cutting out three beers or four apples per day (depending on which you think is healthier). Starvation is the key to losing weight. Exercise is helpful, in that it tends to keep the body from adapting to starvation, and resistance exercise that builds muscle is also useful in that muscle tissue has a much higher resting metabolism than fat.
