My current audio PC is slowly biting the dust. So, it's time to build a new one. I normally don't ask for build advice, but since this is going to be built specifically for recording I'd like to know what some of you guys have to say about operating systems and Sonar.
 
I'll either be using XP 64 or Win 7 64 with a minimum of 16 gigs of RAM. While XP 32bit with a Core Duo and 3.5 gigs of RAM has done the trick nicely for years, I don't really see the point in building a new machine and limitling the resources with a 32bit system.

Forget XP 64, Win 7 is what you want.

Cakewalk have said that X2 will not be supported for any XP system

It might work, it might not, but if it doesn't you are on your own.

I agree 100%...don't even think about XP.  Get at least Win7 PRO...that way you are not limited by any amount of RAM and your system will be much more stable plus having support for Sonar X2.

Unlike the 32 bit version XP 64 bit was a bit of a dogs dinner apparently. All those years ago it really was the bleeding edge.

XP has been a great survivor but its in it's death throws now. Along with the software compatability issues you will probably find problems getting drivers for modern hardware.
