Can't seem to do my usual trick of pulling the corner of the audio track to do a fade out when an envelope is on it. So for example, I have  a volume envelope on a piano track and want to smooth out the tail at the end ... I can't do this, but when going to a track without an envelope on it, all is fine?

Basically I can't get the cursor to stop showing a volume icon.

Make sure you have the track set back to "clips" after dialing in automation.
I find tracks with automation can be pesky and seem to return to the automation editing position and I have to keep resetting each track back to clips to avoid moving automation envelopes by mistake.

Hopefully this helps....

If you don't actually need to see the envelopes you can click the Track View menu thingy and switch to Clips instead of Automation. The automation will disappear and then you can do your fades. I may have misunderstood the question though. Still a newb meself.

It works.... make sure you're using the Smart tool and set it back to clips as Beepster said.

If you already have a volume envelope on the track, why aren't you using that to do your fade rather than the clip fade envelope (which is limited in terms of functionality as opposed to a Track Volume Envelope)?

Set the tool back via the Edit Filter in the Track Header
