how do i know which version X-1 do i have for updates? i see on the update page X-1's range from A to D. when i click on "about sonar" it does not say which one i have.
there is so much to learn. BTW, how necessary are downloading the updates anyway?

You should have the latest one and that is X1d Build 535

Just click Help > About sonar and it tells you what you have

The "About" splash screen will tell you what "build" and version you have. For example mine said "Build 425" when I first installed. If you have not installed the updates you won't see a letter version (if I remember correctly). Yes you do want the latest update to the "D" patch. It is more stable. Depending on what version you have the process varies. Be sure to read the patch installation directions that will come with the download. It will tell you what you need to do for your specific version.
