@ProjectM... Yeah, I was reminded of the string banks on my DX7. I mean I could still use them I guess and free is always good but wow, people pay $149 for that? Maybe it sounds better once it's installed.

Really?  It sounded to you like the sounds on your DX7?

Are we talking about the Yamaha DX7?  If so, I'm flabbergasted..

I just downloaded the strings and played with them a bit, and I can officially say that they fill a niche in my Dim Pro toolbox.  I'm quite impressed, though I know they're not Vienna Symphony quality, they offer something I didn't have before.  It just makes X2 all the better.

@jb101... Yeah, the demo does. I'm sure it could do far more than that but the DX7 really was my first thought listening to it. And there ain't nothin' wrong with the DX7. I plan on using it quite often once I'm set up a little better but I know I'm not gonna get an authentic symphony or chamber music tone out of it. I was just hoping this package might come close to that level of realism. We'll see. If they truly are pure samples then layering the single string versions should do what I am describing. I'll have it soon enough and I'm certainly not complaining... just stating what my ears are telling me from the demo. Cheers.

Had a listen on the demo.  How would you say they compare to Garritan, for example.? I understand that they're not up to Vienna Symphony, but to compare them to F.M. strings from the eighties ?!?..  Incomprehensible

They sounded okay to me.  For free, they sounded great.

@Lynn... Definitely happy about a nice bonus like that and even if it isn't exactly what I envisioned I will certainly make use of it. Just wasn't exactly what I thought it was which is more my ignorance on various soft syths than a statement on the software. As I said that is an extremely popular tone these days so it is by no means a bad tool. Not complaining ya'll... not complaining.

I also said they sounded more nuanced than the DX7. I do not think it sounds exactly like the DX7... it just is very reminiscent of it to my ears. Please don't take offense to my ramblings. :-/

It does sound more nuanced than the DX7 but definitely has that digital stabbing type quality as opposed to the smooth warm acoustic tone I was expecting seeing as how they are supposed to be actual samples.

I'm pretty sure you'll find you can eq and sweeten them to more of your liking Beep... especially if you don't put them too up front in a mix.

I didn't take offence, and none was meant.

But how one can compare FM strings to a reasonably sampled string section, I don't understand..

I remember using the Roland Jupiter 8, Juno 60 etc. for strings, back in the day.. When I first got to use Korg M1s and Roland D50, and Kawai K1 and  K4, I couldn't believe how realistic they sounded in comparison.  Things just seem to get better.  I still used the analog gear for warmth, but the digital stuff just beats it for realism.  I used to layer the S & S with analog sounds to get some warmth.....

I just found it odd to hear the DSF stuff compared to the FM stings that I hated at the time.  Thin, was a word bandied about at the time.

FM did lots of great sounds, bells, that Elec Piano sound at the time, etc.  But to say FM strings sounded better than the DSF collection makes me think that you have never heard a real string section..

Horses for courses, though.  Sometimes I prefer that Melotron sound to accurate strings or voices, but that's my age..

Edited for spelling

@Randy... Good to know. Do you have this package? As I said I'm sure it can do far more than the demo suggests. Sounds like someone just set their controller to trigger the 10 string versions and had at 'er.

@jb101... I guess you have this package or at least experience with similar DSF stuff. Your thoughts on the single instrument layering I mentioned would be appreciated. My uses for it would probably be different than most. I was kind of hoping for a more resonant "bow" kind of sound. And seriously if you haven't listened to the demo I'm referring to it is on this page... http://www.store.cakewalk...ductid=10-DSSS1.00-20E
