Hi,

For those of you who create SONAR tutorial videos (and others who may know), what screen recorder software do you use or would recommend? I know there are some free ones out there, and that would be preferred (if it works well). There are tons of mixing tutorials and plugin demo videos on Youtube, but I can't seem to find what software is used to record these. Are there things to consider, like using ASIO for example? I'm interested in a program that would allow me to record my voice as well. OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is frequently mentioned on Youtube, but seemingly mostly in gaming context. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

You'll find these recommendations mentioned in podcasting tutorial videos and blog posts, but they're applicable for your intended use.

To capture the audio, I got both the VB-Cable and Voicemeeter Banana apps. They're donationware. The work fine for free, with no restrictions, but they're good apps and actively maintained (which is important to me), so I donated for both. Note that when you donate for VB-Cable, you get two additional virtual cables.

Voicemeeter Banana: http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Voicemeeter/banana.htm

To capture/create a video, check out Mirillis' Action! app.

And then check out this video on how to use them to capture SONAR:

Thanks, TheMaartian!

I will definitely have a look at those links as well as the video.

And thanks for the welcome.

Thank you too, Fleer!

I will have a look at Camtasia as well. Do you use this by itself, or do you need something additional for routing the audio (as posted by TheMaartian above)?

With Camtasia, I suspect that you would still need a virtual audio cable. Maybe not VM Banana, just VB-Cable.

Techsmith is a great company. I've used SnagIt since Win95 (I knew one of the original developers). I have used Camtasia in the past. But it's $300. That's why I didn't mention it. Action! is $30, and I donated $20 for VM Banana, and you can try them both for free.

Ah, yes... the $300.00 price tag does indeed eliminate that option.

Would have for me as well, luckily it's a teaching tool at university.

Not sure if this would meet your needs or not, but Movavi screen recorder is pretty good.   I think it's $50
They have a tryout version.
